Chapter 9 - Hope Ellis

Helen had a sister.

She never knew.

Margaret had delivered twin girls in 1958.

Helen and Hope.

According to official records, Hope died hours after birth.

No burial record existed.

We had seen enough false deaths to understand what that meant.

Margaret apparently placed Hope with another family.

Why?

No explanation.

Then Frank recognized the woman in the photograph.

Twenty-five years earlier, she had approached him at a gas station.

She called herself Anne.

She asked about Emily.

Frank thought she was a teacher from Emily's school.

She told him:

“Watch Gregory.”

Then disappeared.

Frank never connected her to Helen.

The resemblance was obvious now.

Hope had been watching the family.

Could she be responsible for the recent transfers?

DNA records eventually identified a woman named Hope Bennett living in Tennessee.

Except Hope Bennett had died eighteen months earlier.

Verified.

Open casket.

DNA from personal belongings.

For once, dead actually meant dead.

Her daughter, however, was alive.

Sarah Bennett.

Thirty-nine.

And Sarah looked enough like Helen at that age to fool old photographs.

Sarah agreed to speak with investigators.

She knew about Margaret.

She knew about Emily.

And she knew about the trust.

“My mother spent her life trying to undo what Margaret did.”

Hope had been adopted by a loving family.

She did not resent the adoption itself.

She resented that Margaret secretly monitored her and later tried to recruit her into hiding financial crimes.

Hope refused.

Then Emily found her.

The two women worked together.

They traced Gregory's thefts.

They discovered Gregory had stopped years earlier and repaid most of the money.

Someone else had taken over.

Hope suspected Margaret herself.

But Margaret died in 2010.

The transfers continued.

So someone inherited the scheme.

Sarah said:

“My mother thought it was Kevin.”

Kevin exploded.

“I was barely involved!”

Sarah nodded.

“That's what she eventually realized.”

Kevin had authorized documents Gregory placed in front of him as a teenager.

Later he signed two corporate forms in his twenties without understanding them.

Irresponsible.

Potentially complicit.

But not mastermind.

Then Sarah looked at Helen.

“My mother suspected you.”

Helen cried.

“I didn't do it.”

“I believe you.”

Rachel frowned.

“Then who?”

Sarah opened her laptop.

She had digitized Hope's investigation.

The H.E.P. signature didn't stand for Helen Elizabeth Parker.

It belonged to a company.

Heritage Equity Preservation.

H.E.P.

Someone had deliberately made it resemble Helen's initials.

Heritage Equity Preservation was founded by—

Judith Warren.

Frank stared.

“My first wife?”

Yes.

Judith had created the company seventeen years earlier.

Money from Emily's trust moved through it.

Maybe Judith had been stealing.

Or hiding assets from someone else.

Then Sarah revealed that Hope met Judith six years ago.

The last time either woman was publicly seen.

They drove together toward Asheville.

Hope returned.

Judith did not.

Hope refused to explain.

Before dying, Hope told Sarah:

“If Frank ever learns Emily is alive, give David the green file.”

I stared.

“David?”

Me?

Sarah shook her head.

“Not you.”

Another David.

David Parker.

Frank's younger brother.

Rachel looked confused.

“Dad doesn't have a brother.”

Frank closed his eyes.

“Yes, I do.”

Of course he did.

David Parker had disappeared forty-one years earlier.

And according to Frank:

“He left with Judith.”
