Chapter 7 - The Girl Called Claire

Judith's letter was twelve pages.
She wrote it seventeen years earlier.
Why had it been buried near Frank's field?
Someone had moved it recently.
The letter explained what happened in 1978.
Claire was born healthy.
Frank was her legal father.
But Judith had become pregnant during a brief separation.
The biological father was another man.
Judith never told Frank.
Frank reconciled with her before the birth and raised Claire as his own.
When Claire was three, the biological father appeared.
He wanted custody.
Who?
Gregory Ellis.
Helen's brother.
The room went silent.
Frank's first daughter was Gregory's biological child.
Margaret Ellis discovered it.
Gregory was eighteen when Claire was conceived.
Judith twenty-four.
Margaret considered the relationship scandalous and feared Gregory was unstable.
She arranged a private adoption.
Without Frank's informed consent.
Without Gregory's consent.
Judith agreed initially because Margaret convinced her Claire would be safer.
Then Judith regretted it.
But the adoption was complete.
Margaret told Frank Claire died.
Gregory was told Judith moved away with the child.
Two men lost the same daughter through different lies.
Years later Gregory learned the truth.
That was why he became obsessed with Margaret's estate.
He believed part of the family fortune belonged to Claire.
Maybe legally it didn't.
Emotionally, he believed Margaret owed her everything.
Then Helen whispered:
“Gregory knew Dad was raising his daughter?”
Eventually.
And when Frank married Helen—Gregory's sister—the family became impossibly entangled.
Gregory hated it.
He started moving money from Margaret's investments.
At first, according to Judith, he was creating a hidden fund for Claire.
Then greed took over.
Again, a motive that began with restitution became theft.
Emily discovered it.
She also discovered Claire's existence.
That was why she disappeared.
She wanted to find her half-sister/cousin—depending which family line you followed—before Gregory did.
Rachel asked:
“Did she?”
Judith's letter said yes.
Claire had been adopted by a couple in Virginia.
Her name became Catherine Brooks.
Emily found her at age twenty-eight.
Catherine wanted nothing to do with the Parker or Ellis families.
She had good parents.
A stable life.
She refused inheritance.
She refused Frank.
That hurt him.
But Frank nodded.
“She had that right.”
Then the final page changed everything.
Judith wrote:
Catherine is not the woman you need to protect.
There was another child.
Rachel looked up.
Another?
Judith had been pregnant with twins.
Claire and Caroline.
Only Frank never knew.
Margaret arranged both adoptions.
Claire became Catherine Brooks.
Caroline's records disappeared.
Judith spent decades searching.
Emily joined that search.
And according to Judith:
Caroline was raised under a name Frank would eventually recognize.
The letter did not say which.
Then Helen whispered:
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
She was staring at the birth dates.
“What?”
Helen's hands shook.
“Caroline was born May 14, 1978.”
“So?”
Helen began crying.
“My cousin Melissa was adopted.”
Rachel frowned.
“When was she born?”
Helen whispered:
“May 14, 1978.”
Melissa Ellis.
Gregory's supposed cousin.
A woman raised inside Margaret's extended family.
If Caroline and Melissa were the same person—
Margaret hadn't sent both twins away.
She had hidden one inside her own family.
Then Frank whispered:
“Melissa isn't your cousin.”
Helen looked at him.
“No.”
May you like
“She’s your niece.”
And Gregory had spent his entire adult life standing beside his own daughter without knowing who she was.
