Chapter 6 - Frank's Missing Daughter

Frank cried when we showed him the adoption decree.

For nearly fifty years, he had believed his first child died.

Judith told him Claire developed a sudden infection.

Frank was working out of state.

By the time he returned, Judith said the funeral had already happened.

There had been an urn.

No body.

Frank had accepted it because he was twenty-five, devastated, and trusted his wife.

Then Judith left.

“Why would she do that?”

Nobody knew.

Frank remembered Margaret Ellis from those years.

She had been a county social worker before becoming wealthy through family land investments.

Margaret helped Judith after Claire's supposed death.

Years later, Frank met Margaret's daughter Helen.

Coincidence?

Frank no longer believed it.

Neither did I.

Then Frank told us about the call from “Emily.”

It happened six weeks earlier, not yesterday.

The woman said:

“Dad?”

Frank knew the voice immediately.

Older.

But Emily.

She told him not to trust any trust records bearing her electronic signature.

She had never authorized the recent transfers.

Someone was moving money again.

“Who?”

Emily refused to say.

Instead she told Frank:

“Find Claire.”

Frank thought she meant Rachel.

No.

She meant his first daughter.

Then yesterday, Emily called again.

This time she said:

“Claire found Judith.”

Frank demanded to speak to her.

The line disconnected.

Minutes later Kevin arrived.

Frank confronted him about the trust.

Kevin admitted Uncle Gregory had asked him to authorize several transfers years earlier.

He claimed they were legitimate maintenance payments.

Frank accused him of helping steal Emily's inheritance.

Kevin became furious.

They argued.

Frank walked toward the lower field to cool down.

Then the boar charged.

“Did Kevin cut the fence?”

Frank shook his head.

“No.”

Kevin cried with relief.

Frank continued:

“But he knows who did.”

Kevin's relief vanished.

“Dad—”

“Tell them.”

Kevin looked at Helen.

She whispered:

“Enough secrets.”

Kevin finally admitted he had seen someone near the fence that morning.

A woman.

Approximately forty.

Dark hair.

He thought it was Rachel at first.

Then she turned.

Older.

Emily?

Kevin wasn't sure.

He followed her.

She disappeared toward the woods.

Near the cut fence.

“You saw someone tampering with the fence and said nothing?”

“I didn't see her cut it!”

“Why didn't you warn Dad?”

Kevin looked ashamed.

“Because I thought it was Emily.”

Rachel stared.

“And?”

“I wanted Dad to find her.”

That reckless choice might have nearly killed Frank.

Kevin understood it now.

Then Frank said something unexpected.

“The boar wasn't meant to kill me.”

How could he know?

Because the woman near the fence left something.

Frank found it moments before the animal charged.

A red ribbon tied to the broken wire.

Judith used to tie red ribbons around confidential files.

A warning.

Someone wanted Frank to notice the fence.

The boar may have entered accidentally after the sabotage.

Dangerous.

Reckless.

But perhaps the goal was to lead Frank to the broken section.

Why?

Frank remembered seeing something buried beside the fence.

A metal tube.

Responders hadn't found it.

Kevin whispered:

“I did.”

He had retrieved it after the ambulance left.

“Where is it?”

Kevin looked at Helen.

“I gave it to Mom.”

Frank stared at his wife.

Helen slowly opened her handbag.

Inside was the tube.

And inside the tube—

a letter addressed to Frank.

In Judith's handwriting.
