Chapter 4 - The Night Emily Died

Helen denied it.
Thomas didn't argue.
He simply opened an old metal box.
Inside were photographs.
A motel receipt.
A handwritten letter.
And an answering-machine cassette.
Thomas had kept everything for twenty-three years.
The night Emily disappeared, she didn't drive off the mountain accidentally.
She staged it.
Not perfectly.
But deliberately.
Emily left her car near the overlook, pushed it down an embankment, and climbed into Thomas's truck.
Why?
Because she believed someone was stealing from the trust.
Not Helen.
Someone much bigger.
Margaret Ellis had invested in several construction companies.
After her death, Emily discovered forged property transfers.
Millions in land were being shifted away from the trust.
She initially suspected Helen because of the $90,000.
Then she found evidence Helen's theft was tiny compared with what someone else was doing.
Emily wanted to disappear for several days and investigate without alerting them.
Thomas helped.
They stayed at a motel outside Knoxville.
Then Emily called Helen.
Thomas still had the recording because Emily used his answering machine to preserve conversations.
Helen's younger voice filled the room.
“Come home.”
Emily answered:
“I can't.”
“Your father is losing his mind.”
“Then tell him the truth.”
“I can't tell him what I did.”
“Mom, this isn't about your ninety thousand anymore.”
Silence.
Emily continued:
“Someone moved almost four hundred acres.”
Helen whispered:
“Who?”
“I think Kevin knows.”
Rachel stared at her brother.
Kevin had been sixteen.
A teenager.
How could he know anything?
Thomas explained.
Kevin had been spending time with their uncle, Gregory Ellis.
Helen's older brother.
Gregory managed Margaret's construction investments.
He was the trustee's financial adviser.
Emily suspected Gregory was using Kevin.
Not as a mastermind.
As access.
Kevin knew passwords.
Family routines.
Where Margaret kept papers.
Then the recording changed.
A knock sounded at the motel door.
Emily whispered:
“Thomas?”
Thomas's recorded voice answered:
“I'm right here.”
Another knock.
Emily opened the door.
Then she gasped.
“Mom?”
Helen's recorded voice came from the doorway.
Rachel stopped the tape.
“You were there.”
Helen cried.
“Yes.”
She had driven to Knoxville after Emily secretly told her the motel.
Helen wanted her daughter home.
She also wanted Emily not to tell Frank about the stolen $90,000.
They argued.
Then another person arrived.
Gregory.
Helen claimed she never told him the motel.
Someone else had.
Gregory demanded Emily hand over the documents.
Thomas tried to intervene.
Gregory threatened to call police and reveal the staged crash.
Emily panicked.
Then she made a decision.
She would leave permanently.
Thomas would help her.
Helen begged her not to.
Emily answered:
“I'll come back when Rachel is safe.”
Rachel cried.
“Safe from what?”
Thomas looked at Kevin.
“From him.”
Kevin recoiled.
“I was sixteen!”
Thomas nodded.
“Exactly.”
Emily wasn't afraid Kevin would intentionally hurt Rachel.
She was afraid Gregory was grooming him to become the next person inside the family who could be manipulated.
Then Thomas revealed the final piece.
Emily left with someone that night.
Not Thomas.
Not Helen.
A woman.
Helen whispered:
“Judith.”
Rachel frowned.
“Who's Judith?”
May you like
Helen answered:
“Frank's first wife.”
