Chapter 12 - Gregory Ellis

Gregory Ellis supposedly died from pancreatic cancer nine years earlier.
Unlike Emily, there had been a funeral.
Open casket.
Helen saw him.
Kevin saw him.
Rachel saw him.
So Gregory was dead.
Frank listened again.
Same voice.
But voices can run in families.
Helen whispered:
“Gregory had a son.”
Nobody knew.
Before marriage, Gregory fathered a child with a woman named Linda Cole.
The boy was adopted by Linda's later husband.
His name became—
Cole Matthews.
Frank's farmhand.
The man who had worked beside him for eight years.
Gregory's biological son.
Kevin stared.
“Cole is my cousin?”
Yes.
And perhaps the modern thief.
Cole had grown up knowing Gregory.
Gregory contacted him secretly when Cole was twenty.
He told him about Margaret's trust.
About Claire and Caroline.
About the money he believed Margaret stole from his children.
Gregory convinced Cole the Ellis family owed him an inheritance.
When Gregory died, Cole continued the obsession.
He got a job with Frank.
Watched the family.
Found Kevin's records.
Discovered Emily was alive.
Then started siphoning money through the same corporate structure.
Approximately $700,000.
But Cole's role in the boar attack remained unclear.
The video showed Emily warning Frank.
Someone had opened the fence.
Cole knew.
Did he do it?
Police found him two days later.
He surrendered.
His explanation surprised us.
“Yes, I cut the fence.”
Rachel nearly attacked him.
He raised his hands.
“I wasn't trying to hurt Frank.”
Then why?
Emily asked him to.
Everyone stared.
Emily wanted an unnoticed route onto the property because she believed someone was following her.
Cole cut the fence.
He knew wild boars occasionally crossed nearby land but claimed he checked the field first.
He was reckless.
Criminally reckless perhaps.
But there was no evidence he intentionally released an animal toward Frank.
The boar entered unexpectedly.
Cole saw it too late.
After Frank fell, Cole helped Emily escape because she begged him.
Then he took the second phone.
Why?
It contained evidence of his theft.
There it was.
Not attempted murder.
Self-preservation after a dangerous mistake.
Cole admitted stealing the $700,000.
He believed it was money Gregory had intended for him.
That excuse didn't make it his.
Then he told us where Emily was.
A cabin outside Boone.
We went with law enforcement.
The cabin was empty.
But Emily had left a letter for Rachel.
Little Bird,
If Dad found me, everything accelerated too fast.
I wanted to come home after I finished this.
I don't know if I get to choose that anymore.
Rachel cried at the childhood nickname.
Then:
Don't believe anyone who tells you I stayed away because I hated our family.
I stayed away because every time I got close, another document proved Grandma Margaret had built our family around a lie.
The final page contained an address.
Cemetery.
Margaret Ellis's grave.
Emily wrote:
Grandma isn't buried alone.
Helen whispered:
“What does that mean?”
The grave was legally opened under investigation.
Margaret's coffin contained her remains.
But beneath it was a second sealed container.
Not a body.
Documents.
Birth certificates.
Adoption files.
Photographs.
And one letter addressed:
TO MY DAUGHTER HELEN, WHEN EMILY FINDS THE COURAGE TO COME HOME.
Margaret had anticipated Emily discovering everything.
Then Helen read the first sentence.

You have spent your entire life believing Frank met you by accident.
He didn't.
