Chapter 8 - The Second “Emma”
Investigators refused repeat mistake of assuming resemblance meant identity.
They reconstructed footage.
Woman carrying box was approximately two inches shorter than Rebecca.
Hair was wig.
Face mostly obscured.
Cream sweater identical.
She entered kitchen at 8:19 during camera outage transition and exited service door four minutes later.
Rebecca had been upstairs with Lily.
So two women dressed as Emma were inside mansion that morning.
Who?
Margaret?
Too old and different build.
Adult Lucy Hale?
DNA testing from cup left near service door matched Lucy.
Emma stared.
Lucy admitted.
She had come to mansion too.
Why?
Daniel had contacted her months earlier with claims Catherine illegally kept Lucy as child.
Lucy knew claims false.
But Daniel possessed old photograph of Catherine’s basement box.
Lucy wanted recover documents because they contained her childhood case records.
Privacy mattered.
She did not want daughter or strangers reading them.
Daniel then involved Grace without Lucy’s consent.
When Grace disappeared from babysitter, Lucy came searching.
She entered through passage using instructions Daniel previously sent.
Found metal box in wall niche.
Carried it upstairs.
Why dress like Emma?
She didn't.
Cream sweater belonged to her.
Similarity on camera came from brunette hair and same general build.
Later interpretation was biased because everyone expected another Emma.
Security footage was poor.
Once full-resolution enhancement reviewed, she did not actually look identical.
Another illusion.
Lucy took box.
Then saw Rebecca dressed as Emma and realized something dangerous happening.
Instead of calling police immediately, she tried find Grace herself.
Bad decision driven by fear.
She left box in car.
Daniel later took Grace from passage and eventually abandoned her safely near bus stop when police presence grew.
Lucy found Grace only after police had already recovered her.
She turned over box.
Inside were original Meridian records.
At last.
Would they clear Jonathan Mercer?

Would they prove Catherine stole children?
No.
Would they prove Michael Ward embezzled?
No.
They showed accounting structure.
Meridian billed county for placement “service days.”
Some entries duplicated when child moved between temporary caregivers.
Jonathan Mercer discovered issue.
Instead of reporting immediately, he instructed staff manually rebalance later invoices.
That concealed error from county.
Not necessarily original intentional theft, but later concealment.
Margaret discovered.
Michael Ward objected.
Catherine reported.
Then file contained Michael’s initials on $42,000 adjustment.
Aaron believed this incriminated father.
Margaret explained:
Michael created correction.
He moved $42,000 from duplicate-billing revenue into suspense account awaiting county reconciliation.
Mercer later accused him of unauthorized transfer.
So Michael wasn't stealing $42,000.
He was isolating questionable funds.
Bank records supported.
Aaron cried when independent accountant confirmed.
His father had been telling truth.
But Catherine had not sacrificed him.
She omitted Michael from complaint because Margaret asked her to.
Why?
Michael had recently gained custody visitation with Aaron.
Margaret feared financial investigation—even unfounded—would be used in custody dispute.
She begged Catherine keep Michael name out until evidence secured.
Catherine agreed.
Protective secrecy again created decades of misunderstanding.
Then why Michael never cleared before death?
Because he signed confidential settlement with Meridian.
He received severance and neutral reference.
Not hush fortune.
He chose stability.
Aaron never knew.
Inside box was signed copy.
He stared at father's signature.
Everything he had kidnapped Emma to discover had been available in paper he never possessed.
Then Ethan turned last page.
One Meridian invoice had been circled by Catherine.
CHILD 05 — EMMA WARD.
But Emma had never been placed through Meridian.
Was it synthetic audit test?
Earlier assumption.
Catherine wrote beside it:
