Chapter 7 - Michael’s Son

His name was Aaron Ward.

Thirty-eight.

Michael Ward’s son from brief first marriage before family knew Catherine.

No hidden twin.

No secret sibling for Emma.

A cousin she had never met.

Aaron grew up in Nevada with mother.

After Michael died in documented construction accident, Aaron received box of papers.

Inside:

Meridian invoices.

Catherine letters.

Photograph of Emma and Lucy.

Map of Carter mansion basement.

Aaron spent years believing Ward family had stolen proof that could clear his father.

Why would Michael need clearing?

Michael also worked Meridian briefly.

Jonathan Mercer accused him of embezzling $42,000.

Charges never filed.

Company withheld final severance.

Michael insisted accounting discrepancy came from Mercer’s duplicate billing scheme.

Catherine and Margaret believed him.

But Catherine’s official complaint omitted Michael’s name to prevent investigation expanding into family conflict.

Aaron interpreted omission as betrayal.

He believed Catherine sacrificed Michael to protect herself.

After Michael’s death, resentment hardened.

Then Daniel Mercer found Aaron online.

Two sons of men damaged by same scandal, but opposite narratives.

Daniel believed Mercer innocent.

Aaron believed Mercer guilty but Ward sisters protected themselves instead of Michael.

They cooperated temporarily to find original basement file.

Then split.

Daniel wanted prove father.

Aaron wanted clear his.

Who tied Emma?

Aaron.

He confessed after arrest.

He entered mansion through old passage.

He intended frighten Emma into revealing file location.

He believed she knew.

Emma genuinely didn't.

Argument escalated.

Aaron restrained her to stop her leaving while he searched.

He did not intend prolonged imprisonment, he claimed.

That did not excuse kidnapping.

He left her tied when alarm sounded from motion sensor.

Then Rebecca encountered him outside.

Aaron let her think someone else remained.

He later returned? No.

Margaret later found Emma and failed help.

Multiple bad decisions layered into one terrifying night.

Who brought Grace into basement?

Daniel.

After Aaron left, Daniel used passage early morning with Grace as part of grotesque “memory recreation.”

He did not know Emma was inside initially.

When he saw her bound, he panicked.

Did he free her?

No.

He feared involvement.

He moved Grace away, then contacted Rebecca indirectly.

Again someone left Emma.

Then Grace wandered back into basement after Rebecca’s breakfast impersonation? Timeline.

Daniel had dressed Grace like Lily and told her say line:

“Daddy, you found wrong mommy.”

He intended Ethan hear it during staged encounter upstairs? He expected Ethan present? But Ethan left. Grace wandered through passage later and appeared behind Ethan during rescue.

Daniel had coached phrase to provoke family.

Grace did not understand meaning.

She thought it was game.

That explained second girl.

She looked similar because deliberately styled.

She was Lucy Hale’s daughter Grace, no relation to Lily.

She was never secretly Ethan’s child.

“Wrong mommy” referred Catherine allegedly caring for wrong child? Daniel’s narrative.

But how did Grace enter locked basement without door?

Service passage.

How leave?

Same passage while adults turned toward Emma? In video she vanished after cut. Actually no need vanish in prompt before cut; later police found elsewhere. We established she was later found bus stop. Need Daniel retrieved via passage? He could pull her away after cut. Yet Ethan would notice. Better hidden passage entrance close to doorway; Grace panicked when light flickered, retreated before Ethan reached her, Daniel waiting in passage then took her out. He later abandoned safe at bus stop.

Then why Emma recognized Grace?

She had seen Grace earlier with Daniel when restrained. Daniel brought child into room briefly and told her practice line.

Emma was horrified.

She knew girl was being used.

She did not know identity.

Why did Emma say “Don't turn around”?

Because she recognized blue dress and feared Aaron/Daniel was behind Grace.

Not because she knew hidden twin.

Central visual mystery now had strong explanation.

But one question remained.

Where was original basement box?

Aaron didn't find it.

Daniel didn't.

Rebecca didn't.

Margaret didn't.

Emma didn't know.

Police searched wall.

Nothing.

Then Lily approached Ethan.

“Mommy put box somewhere.”

Emma frowned.

“I didn't.”

Lily shook head.

“Other Mommy.”

Rebecca went pale.

During breakfast impersonation, she had carried a small metal box upstairs.

Rebecca denied remembering.

Security footage recovered final seconds before outage.

Rebecca crossed kitchen holding rusted box.

She stared at image.

“I never carried that.”

But it was clearly her.

Or another woman dressed exactly like Emma.

May you like

And DNA from handle did not belong to Rebecca.

There had been a second impersonator.
