The invoice date was misleading.
Document had been reissued six years ago when Ethan renovated mansion.

Owner then:
Jonathan Mercer.
Carver Restoration installed reinforced archival door after several break-ins at Meridian administrative offices.
No prison.
No hidden detention room.
Secure records storage.
When Ethan renovated, contractor reused existing steel door and billed it under current work authorization.
Ethan signed package of forty-seven renovation items without noticing specific door.
So his signature genuine.
Memory ordinary.
No conspiracy.
Then why room had rope, lamp and no obvious interior release?
Interior handle had been removed during later storage conversion because door normally kept open when occupied.
Aaron closed it during kidnapping.
Unsafe.
Building code review found violation.
Ethan ordered door removed after investigation.
Hidden passage was likewise legacy maintenance corridor omitted from modern floor plan because supposedly sealed.
Contractor had sealed one end but not garden end.
That physical oversight enabled entire crime.
The mansion wasn't built as dungeon.
It became one because someone chose to use forgotten room maliciously.
Emma needed that distinction.
She did not want home transformed into mythical evil place.
People made choices.
Walls did not.
Then original box yielded final key evidence.
Catherine’s handwritten chronology.
1996:
Emma temporarily stayed with Susan 11 days due retaliation concerns.
Lucy Hale temporary placement already ending.
Michael isolated $42,000 disputed funds.
Margaret copied ledgers.
Catherine reported Mercer.
Child 05 Emma Ward was improper billing entry.
Lucy file mistakenly stored in Emma folder.
No child transfer discrepancy.
At bottom:
IF ANYONE EVER USES THESE RECORDS TO CLAIM I TOOK LUCY OR LOST EMMA, THEY ARE LYING.
Emma read sentence aloud.
Catherine had anticipated exactly how incomplete records could be abused.
Why not tell daughters?
She believed official investigation resolved and wanted children untouched.
But after Mercer settlement, some records sealed for privacy.
Daniel later found fragments without chronology.
Aaron inherited fragments.
Peter? unrelated.
Rumor grew.
Then Ethan asked adult Lucy:
“Did Catherine ever tell you you were her daughter?”
“No.”
“Did you believe Emma replaced you?”
“No.”
“Did your mother?”
“No.”
“Then Daniel created that?”
“Yes.”
Lucy looked furious.
“He used my childhood and my daughter to make paperwork feel like a stolen-child story.”
That was central manipulation.
Then Grace asked mother:
“Why did man tell me call myself Lucy?”
Lucy knelt.
“Because Lucy is Mommy’s name, and he wanted people confused.”
“Am I Lily?”
“No.”
“Is Lily me?”
“No.”
“Are we sisters?”
“No.”
Grace nodded.
Simple answers.
The girls resembled each other enough to make adults gasp when styled identically.
No more.
Then Ethan noticed something in Catherine’s chronology.
She referred repeatedly to:
M.W.
Everyone assumed Margaret Ward.
But one line:
M.W. MUST NEVER KNOW MICHAEL MOVED THE $42,000.
Margaret already knew.
So M.W. was someone else.
Rebecca suggested Mercer? Jonathan initials J.M.
Who?
Old Meridian employee roster contained:
MARION WELLS.
Compliance administrator.
Still alive.
Seventy-two.
Investigators contacted her.
Marion agreed speak.
She confirmed accounting story.
Then asked:
“Did you find Catherine's box?”
“Yes.”
“Then you found photograph too?”
No photograph was in box.
Marion became quiet.
“What photograph?”
“The one showing who actually entered basement the night Catherine hid records.”
Emma stared.
“Who?”
Marion answered:
“Ethan's father.”
Ethan froze.
“My father had never met Emma's mother.”
Marion replied:
“That’s what Henry Carter told you?”
Ethan corrected automatically:
“My father was William Carter.”
A silence.
Then Marion said:
“I know.”
“William was here?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He wasn't looking for Catherine.”
“Who was he looking for?”
“Jonathan Mercer.”
