Chapter 11 - William Carter’s Visit
William Carter did know Jonathan Mercer.
Not as relative.
Not secret partner.
Not criminal accomplice.
They served together on regional manufacturing association board in 1990s.
William owned small construction-supply company.
Meridian purchased building materials from it.
When Catherine reported duplicate billing, William was asked by association mediator to help Mercer locate missing financial records.
William came mansion once.
He encountered Catherine.
She distrusted him because she believed Mercer sent him.
William later realized Catherine had legitimate concerns.
He withdrew.
No conspiracy.
Then why hide from Ethan?
It wasn't significant to him.
Ethan was ten.

William died before Ethan bought mansion.

Emma cried.
Her mother had been telling truth.
Aaron’s father had been telling truth.
Ethan’s father had helped.
None told next generation.
Then Ethan wondered if father knew mansion history when Ethan purchased.

Lily discovered Emma through passage/vent and brought Ethan.
Grace wandered back into room after slipping away from Daniel in passage.
She delivered coached line.
Daniel retrieved/redirected her through passage during chaos and later left her near bus stop before police recovered her.
Complex, but every movement now documented through phone logs, fingerprints and recovered exterior camera.
Emma asked Aaron why he left her tied.
His answer:
“I thought if Ethan found you, you'd finally tell him.”
“Tell him what?”
“That your mother ruined my father.”
Emma placed Michael’s settlement copy before him.
“She didn't.”
Aaron read.
His face collapsed.
But Emma did not comfort him.
Pain explained obsession.
It did not excuse what he did.
Then Ethan asked Marion whether any part of “wrong mommy” story was real.
“No.”
“Any switched children?”
“No.”
“Any second Lily?”
“No.”
“Any hidden daughter?”
“No.”
“Was Emma ever not Catherine’s child?”
“No.”
“Was Lucy ever Catherine’s child?”
“Temporarily in her care, never her daughter legally or biologically.”
“Did Catherine steal anyone?”
“No.”
The central answers were becoming firm.
But one thing still bothered Emma.
When she first opened eyes in basement and saw Grace, she had recognized her before Grace spoke.
Not because she looked like Lily.
Something else.
Grace wore small silver pendant.
A bird.
Same pendant Catherine had once given Lucy Hale.
Emma remembered it from childhood.
Adult Lucy confirmed.
She gave pendant to Grace.
That was why Emma's face filled with recognition.
Not recognition of child.
Recognition of object.
Daniel had unknowingly completed visual echo.
Then Lily found old photograph among returned records.
Eight-year-old Emma.
Six-year-old Lucy.
Both wearing matching dresses Catherine had sewn.
Emma stared.
The modern scene had recreated it almost exactly.
Two similar little girls dressed alike.
One biological daughter.
One temporary child in care.
Daniel had seen this photograph.
That was his template.
He deliberately dressed Grace like Lily because old photograph showed Emma and Lucy dressed alike.
The second girl wasn't accidental resemblance.
She was a reenactment.
