Chapter 4 - The Old Owner
The Carter mansion had belonged to Jonathan Mercer from 1989 to 2006.
Ethan bought it much later from unrelated owners.
Mercer was not relative.
He operated private residential support company called Meridian Family Services.
Public records showed no secret orphanage.
No trafficking operation.
No missing children.
But mansion had briefly housed Meridian administrative offices before residential expansion was built elsewhere.
Basement room served secure document storage.
The hidden service passage allowed maintenance access.
That explained architecture.
Lucy Hale had never lived there.
Her file had.
Catherine Ward discovered something while working county family services.
Meridian overcharged public programs for temporary child placements.
Some stays billed twice.
Some transportation expenses fabricated.
Catherine reported irregularities.
Jonathan Mercer retaliated by accusing Catherine of mishandling Lucy’s temporary placement.
Investigation cleared Catherine.
Meridian later repaid funds without admission of intentional fraud.
Mercer died twelve years ago.
So who revived scandal?
His son:
Daniel Mercer, forty-two.
Daniel had spent years insisting father was unfairly blamed.
He recently requested archived Meridian records from county.
Some were missing.
He believed Catherine stole them.
Emma knew nothing.
Rebecca had been receiving Daniel’s messages.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I wanted find files first.”
Again secrecy.
Rebecca admitted impersonating Emma at breakfast because instructions promised reveal location.
But she did not imprison Emma.
When Rebecca entered mansion, Lily immediately knew she wasn't mother.
“She asked why Aunt Rebecca was dressed like Mommy.”
Rebecca panicked.
Instructions told her keep Ethan calm until he left.
Afterward she took Lily upstairs intending explain.
Then heard someone moving in wall.
She became frightened and left through front entrance during camera outage.
Why camera outage?
Instructions included switch inside utility closet.
Rebecca disabled system.
Police were not impressed.
She had knowingly entered home under false pretense and disabled security.
But kidnapping remained separate.
Then who tied Emma?
Emma remembered attacker wore dark clothing and face covering.
Voice disguised.
But attacker said:
“Your mother kept wrong child.”
That phrase drove mystery.
Did Catherine once place Lucy with wrong family?
Adult Lucy denied.
Her placement history had been independently verified.
Catherine temporarily cared for her while mother recovered.
Then Lucy lived with maternal aunt for two years before returning to mother.
No identity substitution.
Then investigators found Meridian invoice:
WARD, LUCY — CHILD 04.
Beside it:
WARD, EMMA — CHILD 05.
Emma stared.
“I was never Meridian child.”
Correct.
The names weren't residents.
They were audit test cases Catherine created while investigating duplicate billing.
She used daughter Emma and temporary ward Lucy as dummy names.
Just like synthetic hospital records can later look real without context.
Someone was interpreting audit test sheet as evidence children were exchanged.
Daniel Mercer?
He had found same sheet.
He believed it proved Catherine manipulated records.
Then Grace was located.
Safe.
She walked into neighborhood police station holding woman’s hand.
The woman had found Grace near bus stop.
Grace said a “nice lady” told her wait there.
No physical injuries.
She carried note:
ASK EMMA WHICH MOTHER SHE REMEMBERS.
Emma's hands began trembling.
Because she did remember something.
When she was eight, during months Lucy stayed with them, Catherine had briefly sent Emma to live with Aunt Susan.
For eleven days.
Emma had always been told Catherine was sick.
Rebecca whispered:
“She wasn't sick.”
“How do you know?”
“I heard them arguing.”
“About what?”
“Mom said someone had threatened to take you.”
Emma stared.
“Who?”
