Chapter 2 - The Woman at Breakfast

Security cameras should have solved everything.

Instead they made it worse.

At 7:12 that morning, a brunette woman entered kitchen wearing Emma’s cream sweater.

Her face appeared only briefly.

But it was Emma.

Or someone remarkably similar.

She made pancakes.

Spoke with Ethan.

Packed Lily’s preschool bag.

At 8:03 Ethan left for office.

At 8:17 the woman took Lily upstairs.

Then cameras went offline for eleven minutes.

At 8:28 Lily reappeared alone.

The woman did not.

Emma said she had been inside basement since approximately 11:00 the previous night.

Doctors found nothing inconsistent with several hours of confinement.

Police asked Ethan painful question.

Could Emma have freed herself, gone upstairs, then returned?

“No.”

Could she be confused from trauma?

Possible.

But ropes mattered.

They had been tied using a double-column restraint knot.

Emma did not know how.

Then forensic technician found strands of brunette hair in kitchen.

DNA results took two days.

Not Emma.

The breakfast woman was real.

She wasn't Ethan’s wife.

But why did she look so similar?

And who was second Lily?

Ethan initially feared something impossible.

A second daughter.

A twin.

A child switched at birth.

Independent records quickly contradicted that.

Lily was born at Fairmont Medical Center four years earlier.

Singleton pregnancy.

Ethan and Emma were biological parents.

No second infant.

No fertility clinic.

No adoption.

No unexplained newborn.

The girl downstairs could not be Lily’s hidden twin.

Detectives returned to Lily.

Child specialist interviewed her gently.

The “other girl” had appeared before.

Three times.

Once outside preschool.

Once near mansion garden.

Once inside upstairs hallway.

“What was her name?”

Lily whispered:

“Lucy.”

Ethan stared through observation glass.

He had never heard name.

“Who told you that?”

“She did.”

“Did Lucy say you were sisters?”

“No.”

“What did she say?”

Lily hesitated.

“She said our dresses made us match.”

That changed everything.

The girls did not naturally dress identically.

Someone had deliberately put Lucy in same blue dress.

Police searched clothing records.

Lily’s dress came from common children’s boutique.

Thousands sold.

No clue.

Then Emma remembered something.

Three weeks earlier she received photograph in mail.

Two girls photographed from behind at park.

Both wearing blue.

Message:

YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHEN HE OPENS THE DOOR.

Emma destroyed it.

Ethan stared.

“You never told me?”

“I thought someone was trying to scare me.”

“They succeeded.”

“I didn't want them scaring Lily too.”

Another secret made in name of protection.

Then detectives found basement steel door had not been opened during period when second girl vanished.

No camera showed her leaving.

But building plans revealed something Ethan had never known.

Behind basement room ran old service corridor.

Sealed during renovation fifteen years earlier.

Supposedly sealed.

Technician tapped wall.

Hollow.

They removed panel.

Behind it:

A narrow passage.

And lying inside passage was a child-sized blue cardigan.

On collar, written in black marker:

LUCY WARD.

Emma saw surname and nearly collapsed.

Ethan caught her.

“You know that name.”

May you like

Emma began crying.

“Ward was my mother's name.”
