Chapter 8 - Victoria’s Errand

Victoria admitted collecting prescription.
She delivered sealed bag directly to Eleanor.
Never opened it.
Why had Eleanor lied that driver picked it up?
She claimed memory error.
At this point nobody believed easy explanations.
Police found pharmacy bag in archived household storage? No. Too unlikely. Instead pharmacist remembers one odd call.
Hours after Victoria collected prescription, someone phoned asking whether tablets could be moved into weekly pill organizer.
Ordinary question.
Caller identified as Eleanor Carter.
Eleanor admitted.
Rachel was busy preparing dinner.
She helped organize medicine.
That gave her physical access.
Could she increase dose?
Yes.
Proof?
None.
Then Sophie finally described what she saw.
Two days before mother died, she entered grandmother’s sitting room.
Rachel’s pill organizer was on table.
Eleanor stood beside it.
Someone else sat across from her.
Sophie recognized voice.
Claire.
But Claire was discussing dinner.
She did not touch pills.
Eleanor opened one compartment, removed tablets, replaced them from another bottle.
Sophie asked what she was doing.
Eleanor said:
“Mommy’s doctor changed them.”
Sophie believed her.
After Rachel died, Sophie remembered scene.
She told Eleanor.
Eleanor replied she had dreamed it.
Now Ethan understood why Sophie feared speaking.
Grandmother had spent eighteen months teaching child memory could not be trusted.
But why did Sophie still point at someone behind Ethan rather than simply say Grandma?
Because Eleanor was not exactly who she meant.
“There was another lady at Mommy’s medicine.”
“Who?”
“She came after Grandma.”
Sophie had seen someone later take pill organizer away.
Who?
She couldn’t remember name.
“She wore red nails.”
Claire wore pale nails.
Eleanor natural.
Victoria red.
Victoria denied ever entering Rachel’s dressing room.
House security old logs showed her keycard accessed upstairs corridor afternoon before Rachel’s death.
Victoria became furious.
“My card was with Martin!”
Martin admitted borrowing it because his own access failed.
So a man used Victoria’s card.
Security camera no longer stored video.
Another loop.
Then lab recreated likely medication exposure.
Rachel’s blood level suggested she might have taken two doses close together.
That could happen accidentally if pill organizer was changed.
Combined with sedative, stress, and underlying condition, risk increased significantly.
Claire’s act and medication tampering may have converged.
Which one killed her?
Impossible to isolate with certainty.
That made legal and moral responsibility layered.
Then Martin confessed something new.
Rachel had called him one hour before dinner.
“She said if she became too sick to speak, I should give Ethan a black envelope.”
“What envelope?”
“I never got it.”
“Who did?”
Martin looked toward Eleanor.
“She said she found it beside Rachel after collapse.”
Eleanor denied.

But Sophie quietly whispered:
“Grandma burned a black envelope.”
