Chapter 5 - Eleanor’s Emerald
Eleanor Carter wore pearls publicly.
Always.
That made it easy to forget she owned other jewelry.
In her private dressing room police found a slim gold ring with small square emerald.
Family photographs showed her wearing it years earlier.
Including Rachel’s final dinner.
Sophie recognized it immediately.
“That one.”
Eleanor did not panic.
“You’re asking a six-year-old to identify jewelry from two years ago.”
“She was five,” Ethan said coldly.
“Exactly.”
But investigators checked photographs.
At Rachel’s lake-house dinner, Eleanor wore emerald ring on right hand.
Claire had stood beside her before Rachel received sparkling water.
No photograph showed packet exchange.
Still circumstantial.
Eleanor offered explanation.
Rachel had been anxious that evening.
Claire suggested mild sleep medication.
Eleanor may have handed her a packet of sweetener.
A child could confuse it.
Claire exploded when told.
“She’s lying.”
“What did Eleanor give you?”
Claire stared at Ethan.
Then finally:
“The pill.”
Silence.
Eleanor’s expression did not change.
Claire explained.
Before Rachel’s final dinner, Eleanor told Claire Rachel was “spiraling” under pressure.
She said Rachel had been awake for days preparing board challenge.
Eleanor knew Claire carried prescription sedative.
She asked Claire to put a small amount in Rachel’s sparkling water.
Claire initially refused.
Eleanor insisted it was only to calm her.
Why would Claire obey?
Because Eleanor had been paying Claire’s mother’s nursing-home expenses secretly for years.
Claire felt indebted.
That was not coercion.
It was influence.
Claire still chose.
After Rachel died, Eleanor convinced Claire medication had nothing to do with it.
Then recently Eleanor—or someone claiming to represent her—sent Claire video still of packet exchange.
Message:
DO IT ONCE MORE OR SOPHIE LEARNS YOU KILLED HER MOTHER.
Claire assumed sender Eleanor.
But number untraceable.
Eleanor denied sending threat.
Ethan almost laughed.
“You asked her once. Now I’m supposed to believe somebody impersonated you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make you think exactly what you think now.”
Possible.
Unlikely.
Then foundation security team recovered footage from mansion kitchen two hours before Ethan’s tea incident.
Claire entered alone.
Five minutes later Martin Shaw entered.
Treasurer.
He handed Claire a white envelope.
Claire had not mentioned that.
Ethan confronted her.
Claire looked terrified.
“That wasn’t the drug.”
“What was it?”
“Cash.”
“Why?”
Martin had paid her $20,000.
Claire claimed it was not bribe.
It was repayment.
For what?
She refused.
Then Martin vanished from mansion before police could question him.
