Chapter 7 - The Medicine Drawer
Rachel kept heart medication in upstairs dressing room.
Only a few people had routine access.
Ethan.
Rachel.
Housekeeper.
Eleanor.
Claire.
And family physician Dr. Marcus Hale during visits.
Adrian Cole had no reason to enter.
Martin Shaw neither.
Suspicion shifted.
Pharmacy records showed Rachel’s prescription changed dose four months before death.
Bottle from night she died could not be found.
Ethan thought belongings had been discarded after funeral.
Housekeeper remembered Eleanor personally packed medications.
Eleanor said she was helping.
Claire said Rachel had once complained pills looked different.
Did she tell doctor?
Yes.
Dr. Hale told her manufacturer changed.
Pharmacy records contradicted.
Same manufacturer.
Why lie?
Dr. Hale insisted Rachel misremembered.
Then his financial records revealed Carter Foundation donated $600,000 to his cardiac-research clinic.
Not personal payment.
Still potential influence.
Ethan confronted him.
“Did you alter Rachel’s medication?”
“No.”
“Did my mother ask you to?”
“No.”
“Did you know Claire sedated her?”
“No.”
Then Sophie saw his photograph.
“That’s not who I pointed at.”
Another suspect removed from central accusation.
She still would not identify person.
Why?
“She said if I tell, Daddy will lose house.”
“She?”
Female.
That narrowed.
Claire.
Eleanor.
One female guest behind Ethan had also been seated there:
Victoria Shaw, Martin’s wife and foundation secretary.
Ethan had forgotten because she left room moments after cup shattered.
Why?
Victoria claimed migraine.
Police found she had resigned foundation position that evening before incident.
Her resignation letter said:
I WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANOTHER CARTER FAMILY COVER-UP.
That sounded enormous.
What cover-up?
She refused without immunity.
Eventually she explained.
After Rachel died, Victoria discovered unsigned internal report showing Eleanor’s emergency loans.
She told Martin.
Martin found Rachel’s missing amendment.
Together they hid it because revealing it could invalidate eighteen months of foundation transactions.
They told themselves money had all returned and no one harmed.
They protected institution.
Another cover-up.
But not Rachel’s death.
Victoria also knew something about medicine.
Three days before Rachel died, Eleanor asked foundation driver to collect a package from pharmacy.
Driver mistakenly delivered to Victoria’s office.
Inside was Rachel’s prescription.
Why Eleanor collected it instead of Rachel?
“She said Rachel was busy.”
Could be innocent.
Then pharmacy CCTV archive surprisingly still existed in insurance claim system.
Video showed woman collecting Rachel’s prescription.
Not Eleanor.
A blonde woman.
Claire.
Claire stared at image.
“That’s not me.”
Hair.
Build.
Similar.
Face obscured.
Who else?
Victoria Shaw was blonde.
She looked at still and went pale.
“It’s me.”
Ethan stared.
“Why were you picking up my wife’s medication?”
