Chapter 13 - The Basement Recording
There was no basement in original suspicion.
That made word dangerous.
Carter mansion had wine cellar and records room below ground.
Victoria said Rachel met her there one week before death.
Why?
Rachel suspected Martin hiding foundation records.
She asked Victoria for help.
Victoria secretly gave her copies.
So Victoria was not merely Martin’s obedient wife.
She had also been helping Rachel.
Contradictory loyalties.
Rachel planned expose emergency loans and document manipulation.
Victoria feared Martin would discover betrayal.
Then after Rachel died, she panicked and helped Martin hide medication bottle.
Why?
To protect husband.
Again.
She had helped Rachel before death and betrayed truth after.
What basement recording?
Rachel had installed small recorder during meeting with Victoria.
Victoria believed destroyed.
It wasn’t.
Encrypted cloud held audio.
Rachel:
“If something happens at dinner, Ethan needs to know Eleanor has been managing everyone like accounts.”
Victoria:
“Your mother-in-law thinks she’s saving foundation.”
Rachel:
“She always does.”
Then:
“And Martin?”
Victoria:
“He’ll protect paperwork before he protects a person.”
Painfully accurate.
Rachel asked about medicine.
Victoria said:
“I saw Eleanor take your refill upstairs.”
Then Rachel:
“The pharmacy called me about a recall.”
Ethan froze.
Rachel herself knew?
She had gotten second call on cell.
If so, why did she take pills?
Audio answered.
“I’m not taking new bottle. I’m using old dose from organizer.”
But organizer had already been refilled by Eleanor with mixed-strength tablets.
Rachel thought she was avoiding recalled medication.
Instead she unknowingly took it.
Tragic.
Then Rachel mentioned Claire.
“She’s acting strange.”
Victoria:
“Do you think Eleanor recruited her?”
Rachel:
“For what?”
“Making you too tired to vote.”
Rachel laughed softly.
“She wouldn’t.”
She trusted Claire.
That was devastating.
Later Claire put sedative in water.
Then recording ended.
This clarified Rachel did not intentionally take risk.
Eleanor’s unauthorized pill handling defeated her precaution.
Still, no evidence Eleanor wanted death.
She wanted Rachel tired and absent from vote.
Then Ethan learned why mother was so determined.
Rachel’s amendment would remove Eleanor’s emergency borrowing authority and require independent approval.
Eleanor had repeatedly used that authority to rescue Carter-owned businesses during liquidity crises, then repay funds.
No permanent losses.
But risky and unauthorized.
Rachel called it governance failure.
Eleanor called it stewardship.
That ideological conflict drove original scheme.
Current Martin scheme was different.
Martin feared Rachel’s amendment and Ethan’s new proposal would expose his later concealment.
He blackmailed Claire independently.
Thus there was no single mastermind controlling both nights.
That made truth more believable and uglier.
Then Victoria handed Ethan a sealed USB Rachel had given her.
“I kept this because I was afraid of Martin.”
“What’s on it?”
“I never opened it.”
Ethan inserted it.
One video file.
Rachel speaking to camera the morning of her final dinner.
“If Ethan ever watches this, then somebody finally stopped choosing for me.”
She looked directly into lens.
Then said:
“The person I’m most afraid of isn’t Eleanor.”
Ethan’s blood went cold.
Rachel named someone.
Audio cut before name.
