Chapter 11 - Why Sophie Pointed at Victoria
Victoria had been seated diagonally behind Ethan.
Almost hidden by chandelier centerpiece.
When Sophie said, “She did the exact same thing to my mom,” Ethan assumed accusation still aimed at Claire.
It wasn’t.
Sophie meant:
Claire put powder into both drinks.
But person she pointed toward afterward was connected to what happened next.
Victoria.
Why?
Sophie remembered mother’s final evening in fragments.
Claire added powder to sparkling water.
Rachel drank only a few sips.
Later she felt dizzy.
Rachel went upstairs.
Sophie followed.
At top of stairs she saw Victoria leaving Rachel’s dressing room.
Red nails.
A small pill bottle in hand.
There.
The “lady after Grandma.”
Sophie had not understood then.
Now she did.
Victoria denied at first.
Then investigators showed old keycard access.
She confessed entering dressing room.
But she did not change pills.
She removed bottle.
Why?
Martin asked her to.
Martin had noticed Rachel becoming drowsy and panicked that she might blame foundation leadership.
He told Victoria to take prescription bottle so family could not immediately compare tablets if Rachel collapsed.
Victoria obeyed.
Horrific concealment.
But if she removed bottle after Rachel already took medication, she did not cause overdose.
Who altered organizer?
Eleanor still prime possibility.
Eleanor finally admitted she changed pill organizer that afternoon.
But claimed she moved tablets according to instructions from Dr. Hale.
Dr. Hale denied giving same-day instructions.
Phone records showed call between them.
Four minutes.
What was discussed?
Eleanor said dosage timing.
Hale said foundation logistics.
No recording.
Then Rachel’s pharmacy profile revealed a startling clerical error.
Her refill contained two different strengths of same medication because pharmacist packaging machine malfunctioned.
Recall issued next morning.
Rachel’s batch number was included.
Could medication alteration have been accidental?
Pharmacy internal report showed approximately twelve bottles affected.
Some tablets were double strength.
Ethan went silent.
So Eleanor may not have swapped in dangerous pills deliberately.
She could have reorganized a bottle already mixed.
Rachel might unknowingly take stronger dose.
That changed potential homicide theory.
Claire’s sedative plus pharmacy error plus underlying arrhythmia could explain death without intentional poisoning.
But why did Eleanor tell Sophie she dreamed medicine scene?
Because she feared blame.
Not necessarily because she knew pills were dangerous.
Then police located Rachel’s missing bottle.
Victoria had not destroyed it.
She hid it in Martin’s office safe.
Tablets remained.
Lab confirmed mixed strengths.
The pharmacy error was real.
Rachel’s death looked less like planned murder.
Yet Ethan could not relax.
Because one person knew about recall before Rachel died.
Pharmacy called Carter household at 4:12 p.m.
Warning message was answered.
