Chapter 4 - The White Packet
The sedative explained part of mystery.
Not all.
Rachel’s autopsy had found enough medication to cause mild drowsiness.
Not enough to kill healthy adult.
Yet Rachel had died hours later.
Could sedative have triggered cardiac event?
Possible.
Not certain.
Specialist explained Rachel’s underlying rhythm disorder made her more vulnerable to dehydration, stress, and certain medications.
But no one could say the half-tablet directly caused death.
Claire’s guilt was real.
Legal causation remained uncertain.
Ethan wanted certainty.
Then Sophie remembered something else.
“At Mommy’s dinner, Claire didn’t bring the paper.”
“What?”
“Somebody gave it to her.”
“Who?”
Sophie shook head.
“Under table. I saw shoes.”
“What shoes?”
“Shiny black.”
That described half room.
Then she remembered a ring.
Large green stone.
Ethan knew immediately.
Adrian Cole wore an emerald signet ring.
Had for decades.
Family attorney suddenly looked far more suspicious.
Adrian denied giving Claire anything.
He voluntarily produced ring.
“Yes, I was at Rachel’s dinner.”
“Were you near Claire?”
“Everyone was.”
“Did you know she drugged Rachel?”
“No.”
“Did you threaten her later?”
“No.”
Adrian’s office records showed he did communicate with Claire repeatedly after Rachel’s death.
Why?
Foundation matters.
Some messages deleted.
Adrian claimed document retention cleanup.
Investigators remained skeptical.
Then one deleted email was recovered.
FROM CLAIRE:
I DID WHAT YOU ASKED. SHE STILL SIGNED IT.
Ethan read sentence three times.
“What did Rachel sign?”
Adrian refused until attorney privilege reviewed.
Eventually court compelled limited disclosure.
Rachel had signed a document at lake house shortly before death.
An amendment to Carter Family Foundation governance.
It removed one trustee’s unilateral emergency authority.
Who?
Eleanor Carter.
Exactly same control Ethan was now trying to remove again.
Rachel had discovered Eleanor approving temporary loans to Carter-related businesses without full board consent.
Money later returned.
But Rachel believed practice dangerous.
She pushed reform.
That night Claire sedated her.
Rachel still signed.
Hours later Rachel died.
The amendment never took effect.
Why?
Because original signed copy vanished.
Adrian claimed Rachel gave it to him.
Then he lost custody during emergency.
Ethan stared.
“You lost the document that removed my mother’s power on the same night my wife died?”
Adrian’s face tightened.
“Yes.”
“Convenient.”
Then Sophie overheard them.
She looked at Adrian’s green ring.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
“That’s not the ring.”
Ethan crouched.
“What do you mean?”
“The person under table had green ring.”
“Yes.”
Sophie pointed at Adrian.
“His is too big.”
