Chapter 8 - Daniel’s Secret

Daniel returned from Seattle immediately.

He did not deny garage.

“I took the key.”

Emma stared.

“You broke into my father’s house?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Dad called me.”

Richard had contacted Daniel before attacking Emma.

He said Emma possessed old Vale property and refused return.

Daniel assumed family archive key.

He entered Robert’s garage while Robert drove to Emma’s house.

Why not tell Emma?

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I thought I could fix this without another fight.”

“You chose your father over asking me.”

“Yes.”

Pattern repeated.

Where was key?

Daniel used it on basement cabinet.

He opened metal box.

What did he remove?

A ledger.

And one cassette tape.

Why?

Richard begged him destroy both.

Did he?

“No.”

Daniel hid them.

Where?

Safe-deposit box.

Good.

Evidence recovered under attorney supervision.

Ledger showed restricted Safe Harbor transactions.

Most legitimate.

Several diverted.

Richard’s consulting company did receive large fees.

But he was not sole beneficiary.

Another company:

North Gate Advisory.

Owner:

Eleanor Vale.

Richard’s wife.

Both profited.

Was this embezzlement?

Possibly.

But context showed some fees covered actual relocation logistics.

Amounts still inflated.

Then Grace Grant entry:

$240,000 authorized.

$20,000 to Melissa.

$100,000 North Gate.

$100,000 Richard Vale Consulting.

$20,000 medical/housing.

So Richard and Eleanor split $200,000.

Serious.

Why?

Richard finally admitted.

They believed Melissa would disappear under protection and no one would audit settlement structure.

That was corruption.

But still not why Emma’s bracelet was hidden.

Cassette provided more.

Laura Carter’s voice.

Recorded night Emma born.

“I found Grace’s death entry. The baby is alive.”

Then:

“Eleanor says she did it to hide them from Melissa’s husband. Richard used it to hide money.”

There.

Clear split.

Eleanor falsified internal status for protective purpose.

Richard exploited it financially.

Laura continued:

“I copied ledger.”

“I took key.”

“If anything happens to me, Robert must know Emma was placed in Room 14 because Richard tried to make me sign.”

Sign what?

Tape damaged.

Then words resumed:

“…not about paternity.”

“…not about adoption.”

“…about silence.”

Emma closed eyes.

Her mother had anticipated assumptions.

Then final audible sentence:

“Richard knows what happened to Grace.”

Everyone looked at him.

Richard whispered:

“I never touched that child.”

“Where did she go?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why are you afraid of bracelet?”

Richard looked at Emma.

“Because the bracelet doesn't just have your name.”

“What else?”

May you like

He answered:

“Your mother wrote something inside it.”
