Why use Robert?
At time he worked construction management.
St. Catherine contracted his company for Safe Harbor renovations.
His signature appeared on building invoices.
Easy to copy.
The fake settlement signature could implicate him if Laura exposed fraud.
That gave powerful reason for Laura to stay quiet:
reveal money scandal and her husband could look involved.
Did Laura know signature was forged?
Yes.
One handwritten note found in her old recipe book:
ROBERT DIDN’T SIGN.
THEY WANT ME TO THINK HE DID.
Emma had owned book for years.
Never noticed because note tucked behind spine.
Laura had been investigating.
Privately.
She suspected someone inside Vale Family Services using identities of Safe Harbor participants and vendors to move restricted funds.
She also suspected Richard.
But another note:
RICHARD IS GREEDY.
ELEANOR IS AFRAID.
NEITHER IS THE ONE CHANGING STATUS.
Changing status meant alive/dead records?
Who was?
A compliance clerk named Adrian Shaw.
He processed both hospital and nonprofit databases.
Adrian vanished from St. Catherine employment week after Emma’s birth.
Police located him now.
Sixty-one.
Living quietly in Ohio.
He agreed interview after attorney.
He admitted changing Grace Grant’s status from ACTIVE to DECEASED.
Why?
“I was told to.”
By whom?
“Eleanor Vale.”
Richard’s late wife again.
Why would she do it?
Adrian said Eleanor claimed Melissa and Grace entered confidential relocation program. Marking infant deceased inside internal donor system prevented abusive father from tracking them.
That sounds protective.
But it also stopped financial audits.
Was Melissa in danger from father?
Records confirm restraining order.
So false status had legitimate protective rationale inside one system—but it was improperly propagated into billing systems, where it concealed missing money.
Eleanor may have intended safety, and someone exploited it.
Who?
Adrian said Richard knew accounting effect.
Richard denied.
Then Emma asked:
“What did my mother find?”
Adrian became nervous.
“Laura found duplicate ledger.”
“What ledger?”
“One showed protected relocation payments.”
“And other?”
“One showed actual recipients.”
Where?
“Cabinet.”
The cabinet brass key opened.
So whoever stole key from Robert’s garage now had original money trail.
Who broke in?
Security footage finally recovered.
