Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Signed

Robert remembered no custody dispute.
No social worker.
No police.
No one claiming Emma.
The retired nurse, Helen Mercer, agreed to meet.
She was seventy-six.
Her memory was clear.
Emma had been taken to Room 14 because hospital received emergency fax shortly after birth.
It alleged Laura Carter had used false identity during prenatal care.
If true, discharge records might be invalid.
Who sent allegation?
Helen could not remember.
But one woman arrived.
Elegant.
Dark-haired.
Wearing red wool coat.
She said she represented Vale Family Services, a private nonprofit working with St. Catherine.
She produced authorization.
Infant temporarily held.
Robert asked:
“Did I sign?”
“No.”
“Laura?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Helen remembered name.
Eleanor Vale.
Richard’s wife.
Daniel’s mother.
Eleanor died six years earlier.
Emma had known her briefly before death.
She had been warm.
Quiet.
Almost overly affectionate.
Emma remembered something now.
The first time they met, Eleanor touched Emma’s cheek and whispered:
“You have her eyes.”
Emma assumed she meant Laura.
Maybe not.
Helen continued.
Eleanor attempted to place baby under ninety-minute “protective identity hold.”
Then Laura discovered.
Despite recovering from hemorrhage, she became furious.
She demanded daughter returned.
A physician reviewed claim and found no valid basis.
Emma returned to parents.
So no baby swap.
No secret adoption.
Robert was father.
Laura was mother.
Emma went home with biological parents.
Why hide this?
Helen said:
“Because hold was tied to something bigger.”
What?
St. Catherine had program called Safe Harbor Maternal Assistance.
It offered emergency housing and confidential medical support to mothers escaping violence.
Vale Family Services partly funded it.
Most legitimate.
But during audit years later, allegations emerged that some women’s records were altered to conceal who paid for care.
Not babies being sold.
Money.
Privacy.
Corporate donors.
And occasionally family pressure.
Laura worked part-time in hospital billing before Emma’s birth.
She discovered irregularities.
That could explain why someone questioned her identity.
Perhaps intimidation.
Robert asked:
“Was Richard involved?”
Helen looked uncomfortable.
“Richard ran operations.”
Not proof.
Then Helen produced photocopy she had kept for years.
The temporary hold authorization.
At bottom:
ELEANOR VALE.
But handwriting analysis later showed signature was not Eleanor’s.
It had been forged.
By whom?
Helen didn’t know.
One more name appeared as internal witness.
R. VALE.
Richard.
Emma stared.
Richard had witnessed a forged attempt to place her under protective hold.
And kept that secret for twenty-six years.
Then Robert found another signature on reverse.
Laura Carter.
One sentence:
I HAVE TAKEN THE ORIGINAL.
May you like
Robert whispered:
“The key.”
