The sentence threatened to send everyone toward wrong conclusion.
Emma had a dead sibling?
Robert immediately rejected it.
Laura had never been pregnant before Emma.
At least not while they were together.
Medical records supported.
No prior stillbirth documented.
So “the baby they said died before you were born” could refer to someone else.
Then DNA returned from old blood on tiny shoe.
Not Emma.
Not Robert.
No close paternal relationship.

So baby shoe did not belong Emma’s sibling.
That closed easy twist.

Hospital artifact catalog had photographs.
St. Catherine used identical first-shoe keepsakes in Safe Harbor maternity program.
Blood likely came from another infant treated during emergency.
Then why hidden with Emma’s bracelet?
Because both were evidence from same incident.
Retired nurse Helen remembered finally.

Someone used Laura’s identity as ledger shield.

Laura found out that night.
That was likely why she took key.
Melissa Grant had accused Vale Family Services counselor of pressuring her to sign confidentiality agreement after child’s minor injury exposed unsafe conditions at housing property.

But payment disappeared.
Melissa received only $20,000.

Consulting company.

Emma confronted Richard.
“You stole from a mother whose baby you later marked dead?”
Richard shouted:
“I didn't mark anyone dead!”
“Then why use my mother’s case number?”
“I didn't!”
Could be partly true.
Richard admitted his company received money.
He claimed Eleanor arranged it.
Eleanor managed nonprofit.
Was she culprit?
Conveniently dead.
Emma refused accept easy scapegoat.
Then another record emerged.
Melissa Grant settlement was signed by:
ROBERT CARTER.
Robert stared at signature.
“That isn't mine.”
Emma looked at father.
Richard smiled grimly for first time.
“Now you understand.”
