Chapter 5 - The Brass Key
Laura had stolen something from St. Catherine.
Or taken evidence she believed belonged to her.
The brass key was not ordinary.
A retired facilities manager recognized it.
It opened an old dual-control records cabinet used by Safe Harbor program.
Cabinet required two physical keys.
One hospital.
One outside fiduciary.
Laura apparently took hospital-side key the night Emma was born.
Why?
Because she believed someone was using Safe Harbor to hide illegal financial arrangements.
Robert felt anger toward wife he could no longer question.
“You never told me.”
Emma answered softly:
“Maybe she thought she was protecting us.”
Robert hated how familiar that sounded.
Protection through secrecy.
Still secrecy.
Then they learned Richard had spent years trying find key.
Why only now?
Laura kept it hidden.
After her death, someone mailed it to Emma.
Who?
Postmark local.
No sender.
Security camera at mailing store overwritten.
The key was gone from Robert’s garage, but duplicate archive records showed cabinet itself had been moved before hospital closure.
Destination:
Vale residence.
Richard’s basement.
That explained why bracelet and shoe were inside same wall.
The old house had been used temporarily to store Safe Harbor records during hospital restructuring.
Richard later bought property.
Did he know artifacts inside wall?
His reaction suggested yes.
Police obtained warrant.
Basement searched fully.
Behind broken panel was narrow cavity extending six feet.
Inside:
old folders.
One metal box.
Empty key slot.
Someone had gotten there first.
Maybe burglar who stole brass key.
The box had been opened within hours.
Contents removed.
But one torn paper remained.

Subject:
LAURA CARTER.
Emma stared.
Her mother had been a case.
Not employee only.
Why?
Robert had met Laura two years before Emma’s birth.
She never said she had used protective maternal program.
Timeline suggested before Robert.
Maybe unrelated domestic threat.
Then second line:
DEPENDENT INFANT: NONE.
So Case 27 predated Emma.
No hidden older child.
Good.
But why did Emma’s birth become tied to it later?

Reason:
SUBJECT CLAIMS DONOR IDENTITY MISUSED.
Donor identity.
Money again.
Laura had discovered someone used her Safe Harbor file to route donations or payments under her name.
Who?
Richard.
Or Eleanor?
Then bank microfilm surfaced.
On night Emma was born, $240,000 moved from Vale Family Services into Safe Harbor restricted account.

Robert stared.
“What was two hundred forty thousand dollars paying for?”
Then Emma’s phone rang.
Unknown voice.
A woman.
“Your mother knew.”
“Who is this?”
“She knew the money was never for her.”
