Chapter 10 - Melissa Grant

The envelope containing brass key had no return name.
Richard recognized handwriting on note.
Melissa Grant.
He had seen it on settlement forms.
That was why he panicked when Emma showed key.
If Melissa was alive, twenty-six-year-old cover-up could reopen.
Police traced postage purchase through archived camera? Recent mail. Yes.
A woman in her fifties mailed envelope.
Facial recognition compared old Melissa photos.
Strong match.
Melissa alive.
She contacted through lawyer voluntarily after investigation became public.
She had lived under name Maya Grantson for decades.
Why stay hidden?
Abusive former husband continued searching for years.
Eleanor helped her disappear.
For that, Melissa remained grateful.
Complication.
“Eleanor saved my life.”
“Then why expose Richard?”
“Because Eleanor also helped him steal from us.”
Both truths.
Melissa confirmed Grace was alive after car crash.
At gas station Eleanor became convinced they were followed.
She asked trusted Safe Harbor volunteer to take Grace separately.
Woman:
Judith Cole.
Plan was reunite next morning.
Crash happened.
Phones failed.
Melissa hospitalized under alias.
Eleanor could not reach Judith.
By time she did, Judith had disappeared.
Why?
Judith believed Melissa died in crash because local report mistakenly listed female fatality.
She feared returning baby to Richard/Vale network.
So she took Grace into informal custody.
Did she adopt her?
Unknown.
Melissa spent years searching.
Eleanor secretly helped.
Richard did not.
He wanted case buried.
That made him more culpable.
Then Melissa revealed key origin.
Eleanor gave her duplicate brass key before death six years earlier.
Instruction:
“If Laura’s daughter ever starts asking about St. Catherine, give this to her.”
Why wait?
Melissa only recently learned Emma married Daniel Vale.
She saw charity article.
She realized Laura’s daughter had married Richard’s son.
Fate, but not conspiracy.
She mailed key.
Emma became unintentional bridge between two families.
Then Melissa looked at Emma.
“Your mother saved my life too.”
“How?”
“Laura threatened Richard. She told him if he ever touched my settlement again, she would expose every account.”
Robert’s eyes filled.
Laura had carried this alone.
Then Melissa handed over old photograph.
Eleanor with infant Grace.
Taken after supposed death date.
So Grace lived at least three days longer.
On back:
JUDITH HAS HER.
WHERE IS JUDITH?
Investigators searched.
Judith Cole died twelve years earlier.
But she had one daughter listed.
Age twenty-six.
Born same year as Grace.
