Chapter 9 - Michael Wasn’t the Hero

For eight chapters, Daniel had unconsciously been building Michael into a martyr.

His dead brother.

The truth-seeker.

The man who staged his death to expose corruption.

Reality was uglier.

Michael had begun as a whistleblower.

Then he became fascinated by the science.

His journals proved it.

Subject response suggests H-line may enable metabolic neutralization pathway.

Potential commercial value enormous.

Daniel felt sick.

Michael wrote increasingly technical notes.

Rare enzyme expression.

Cellular recovery.

Drug-resistance mechanisms.

Then:

A naturally occurring H-22 child would validate everything.

H-22.

Sophie.

Michael had spent years searching maternal descendant lines of Sable subjects.

That was how he found Vanessa.

Not accidentally.

He engineered their meeting.

Vanessa had never known.

She thought she found him during compliance work.

His journal said otherwise.

Target V.C. suitable maternal line.

Daniel looked at her.

“You were a target.”

Vanessa began crying.

Then another line:

Need access to future offspring.

Daniel stared.

The implications were horrifying.

“Did Michael introduce you to me?”

Vanessa shook her head.

But records suggested he influenced the fundraiser where Daniel met her.

Anonymous donation.

Guest list modification.

Someone arranged Vanessa’s invitation.

Michael.

Why?

Because Daniel’s Carter lineage plus Vanessa’s Haley lineage might reproduce a rare genetic combination observed in Sable participants.

Sophie may not have been random.

Their marriage may have been nudged into existence.

Daniel nearly vomited.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.”

Then:

“No. We chose each other.”

Daniel understood why she needed that to be true.

Maybe it still was.

Manipulation can arrange proximity.

It cannot fully manufacture years of marriage.

But the thought remained.

Then Mara uncovered Michael’s final year.

He had established a research shell company.

Aurora Adaptive Medicine.

Secretly funded by Benjamin Reeves.

Enemy?

No.

Partner.

They wanted to commercialize findings from Sable.

Caroline opposed them.

That was why she disappeared again.

Then Vanessa said:

“This doesn’t make sense.”

“What?”

“Michael warned me about Benjamin.”

Maybe after their partnership collapsed.

Then the timeline clarified.

Michael and Benjamin worked together until 2015.

Then Michael discovered Benjamin wanted human testing.

Children.

Michael backed out.

Too late.

Benjamin had copies.

Michael tried stealing them back.

One year later, Michael died.

Real death.

Cause?

Car crash.

Again.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

This family loved car crashes.

Mara obtained the crash reconstruction.

Brake failure.

Not accidental.

Who arranged it remained unknown.

Then Daniel remembered the walnut box.

Michael called it the anchor.

Maybe it held his final protection against Benjamin.

They still had not opened it.

Sophie refused to surrender it.

But perhaps they needed to.

Daniel approached her.

“Sophie, Daddy needs to see.”

She hugged it.

“No.”

Then did something unexpected.

She turned the box upside down.

Tapped three times.

A tiny compartment opened.

Inside was no drive.

No documents.

Only a silver key.

And a photograph.

Caroline holding baby Sophie.

Daniel stared.

Date:

Six months ago.

Caroline had been near Sophie recently.
