Chapter 6 - The Hospital Visitor

Vanessa said Michael appeared less than an hour after Daniel went home to shower.
No appointment.
No warning.
He entered through a service corridor wearing hospital scrubs.
“How?”
“He knew people.”
“What did he want?”
“To see Sophie.”
“Why?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“He said she looked like someone.”
“Who?”
“He wouldn’t tell me.”
That answer became the next obsession.
Daniel obtained hospital security archives.
Too old for full video retention.
But visitor logs existed.
No Michael.
No Caroline.
Then one anomaly.
A temporary staff badge activated on the maternity floor at 3:18 a.m.
Employee name:
Evan Cole.
No such employee existed.
Michael had once used the alias Evan Cole.
Vanessa was telling the truth.
At least about that.
Then Daniel found another detail.
Sophie’s newborn bloodwork had been repeated three times.
Why?
The chart said “sample contamination.”
The pediatrician did not remember.
Lab records showed one test had been ordered by someone using Dr. Reeves’ old provider number.
Franklin Reeves.
The same doctor who signed Caroline’s suspicious death certificate.
But Reeves had retired years before Sophie was born.
Someone had used his credentials.
What were they testing?
Not routine bloodwork.
A genetic marker panel.
Daniel stared at the code.
Why run genetic testing on a newborn without parental consent?
He contacted a medical attorney.
The panel screened several rare hereditary metabolic and neurological markers.
One marker stood out.
A specific mitochondrial variant.
Meaning passed through maternal lineage.
Vanessa.
Not Daniel.
So why would Michael care?
Unless he wasn’t interested in Carter DNA.
He was interested in Vanessa’s.
Daniel confronted her.
“What is your mother’s maiden name?”
Vanessa looked confused.
“Mercer.”
“Your grandmother?”
“Haley.”
“Great-grandmother?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did Michael ever ask?”
Vanessa became still.
“Yes.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“What did you tell him?”
“Nothing. I thought he was being weird.”
Then she remembered.
Michael had once asked whether Vanessa’s maternal grandmother lived in Pennsylvania.
She did.
He asked whether she had ever worked in a hospital.
Yes.
Nurse.
Where?
St. Matthew’s.
The same hospital that supposedly treated Caroline.
Daniel felt everything narrowing.
Not toward Carter Biomed.
Toward Vanessa’s maternal family.
Then Rachel called.
“Daniel, come here.”
“What happened?”
“Ethan remembered something.”
When Daniel arrived, Ethan handed him a folded drawing.
A house.
A woman.
A box.
A little girl.
And one word written with shaky spelling:
NANA.
“Who is that?”
“The window lady.”
Caroline?
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
Daniel stared.
“You said she looked like Aunt Caroline.”
“She did.”
Then:
“But she said her name was Margaret.”
Vanessa’s maternal grandmother was named Margaret Haley.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Her face went completely white.
“My grandmother died when I was twelve.”
May you like
Ethan whispered:
“She said Vanessa thinks that too.”
