Chapter 5 - Before Vanessa Became a Carter

The photograph changed everything.

Vanessa looked younger.

Maybe twenty-three.

Michael would have been thirty-seven.

Caroline in her late forties.

Location?

A restaurant.

Date printed on the back:

Daniel married Vanessa four years later.

She had known his dead brother before meeting him.

When confronted, she did not deny it.

That frightened Daniel more than denial would have.

“You knew Michael.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Caroline.”

“Yes.”

“Are they alive?”

Vanessa stared at the floor.

“Caroline might be.”

“Might?”

“I haven’t seen her in years.”

“And Michael?”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“No.”

“No what?”

“He’s dead.”

“Again?”

“Daniel.”

“No. We’re past vague answers.”

She looked at him.

“Michael died in 2016.”

Daniel nearly laughed.

“My brother died in 2000.”

“The accident was staged.”

“By who?”

“Michael.”

Why?

Vanessa claimed Michael believed someone inside Carter Biomed—the medical-device company their father once partially owned—had been covering up falsified clinical reports.

Daniel knew almost nothing about that.

Their father left the company before retirement.

Michael had been obsessed with conspiracy theories around the time of his “death.”

Maybe they weren’t theories.

He discovered something.

Then disappeared.

Caroline helped him.

Daniel whispered:

“And you?”

“I met Michael years later.”

“How?”

Vanessa worked for a private compliance firm.

Her assignment involved Carter Biomed.

She discovered Michael alive under another name.

Instead of reporting him, she began helping him.

“Helping him do what?”

“Find evidence.”

“What evidence?”

She looked toward the room where Sophie slept.

“I’m not telling you until I know where the box came from.”

Daniel exploded.

“You hurt my son over that box!”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“I know.”

No excuse.

“I lost control.”

“That is not enough.”

“I know.”

“Why were you so desperate?”

Her voice dropped.

“Because the last time that box disappeared, Michael died.”

Silence.

Daniel stared.

“What is it?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

“Bullshit.”

“I’m telling you the truth. Michael never opened it in front of me.”

“Then why does it matter?”

“Because he called it the anchor.”

The anchor to what?

Evidence?

Account access?

Identity files?

Vanessa did not know.

Or claimed not to.

Then Daniel asked the question that had been building since the photograph.

“Why did you marry me?”

Vanessa looked almost offended.

“Not because of Michael.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“That doesn’t make it false.”

She had met Daniel genuinely at a fundraiser.

At least she claimed it was accidental.

Then realized who he was.

She should have walked away.

She didn’t.

“Did you love me?”

“Yes.”

“Past tense?”

Vanessa looked away.

That answer hurt.

Then:

“Why Sophie?”

“What?”

“You weren’t asking Ethan where the box was.”

“You were asking where Sophie was.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Because Sophie found it first.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Then Daniel remembered something.

Sophie’s adoption.

She was his biological daughter.

Vanessa had given birth to her.

No mystery there.

Hospital records.

DNA if needed.

But Vanessa had been strangely protective about Sophie’s first months.

Refused babysitters.

Refused family help.

Stayed home constantly.

Daniel thought postpartum anxiety.

Maybe something else.

“Did Michael ever see Sophie?”

Vanessa whispered:

“No.”

Too quickly.

Daniel stared.

“You’re lying.”

Vanessa began crying.

Then finally:

“He saw her once.”

“When?”

“The night she was born.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

May you like

Michael had supposedly been dead for sixteen years.

And he had come to the hospital when Sophie was born.
