Margaret Haley’s death looked real.
Cancer.
Hospice.
Family present.
Burial documented.
Vanessa attended the funeral.
So who appeared at Daniel’s house claiming to be Margaret?
Possibility one:
Ethan misunderstood.
Possibility two:
Someone impersonated her.
Possibility three:
Margaret had an identical sister.
She did.
Helen.
Born seventeen minutes after Margaret.
Vanessa had never heard of her.
Daniel found the birth certificate.
Twin girls.
Margaret Elise Haley.
Helen Rose Haley.
But only Margaret appeared in later family records.
What happened to Helen?
Placed in a state institution at age nine.
Reason:
Severe behavioral disturbance.
Then records disappeared.
Vanessa stared.
“My grandmother had a twin?”
Apparently.
Then Daniel found a photograph.
Margaret and Helen at age sixteen.
They looked exactly like Caroline Carter.
Not generally.
Specific enough to be disturbing.
Same eyes.
Same cheekbones.
How?
No relation to Daniel’s family was known.
Then a genealogy researcher uncovered a hidden marriage certificate.
Daniel’s grandfather William Carter had married Margaret and Helen’s mother briefly before marrying Daniel’s grandmother.
No children listed.
But timing suggested one possibility:
Caroline Carter might not have been Daniel’s grandfather’s biological daughter.
Family documents suddenly became unreliable.
Vanessa grew increasingly agitated.
“This is not why Michael cared about Sophie.”
“How do you know?”
“Because he already knew this.”
“What?”
“He showed me a picture of Helen years ago.”
Daniel froze.
“You said you knew nothing.”
“I didn’t know who she was!”
Michael called Helen “Subject H.”
He believed her identity connected to something done at St. Matthew’s decades earlier.
Not family gossip.
Medical research.
Then Daniel finally obtained old Carter Biomed files.
In the 1980s, the company funded an experimental neurological study at St. Matthew’s.
Program name:
Sable Project.
Participants:
Children and young adults with rare inherited metabolic traits.
Officially terminated.
Data sealed.
Lead physician:
Dr. Franklin Reeves.
Daniel’s father Henry had been a junior financial officer at Carter Biomed during that period.
Michael had discovered Sable years later.
Maybe that was why he disappeared.
Then they found one surviving participant list.
Most names redacted.
One visible:
Helen Haley.
Vanessa’s great-aunt.
Another:
Caroline Carter.
Daniel’s aunt.
Both women had been subjects in the same experimental study.
Suddenly their resemblance had a possible explanation beyond blood.
Not appearance caused by experiments.
But family connections may have determined enrollment.
Then one entry stopped Daniel cold.
Subject H-17.
Maternal descendants to be monitored.
Vanessa whispered:
“My grandmother?”
No.
Helen.
Then another page.
H-17 descendant line identified through twin sibling Margaret Haley.
Meaning researchers tracked Helen’s genetic marker through Margaret’s descendants too.
Through Vanessa.
Through Sophie.
Sophie had inherited something the Sable Project had been monitoring for decades.
Then Daniel asked:
“What does the marker do?”
The scientist reviewing the file stared at him.
“We don’t know.”
“Then why monitor it?”
“Because according to these notes, one child carrying it survived exposure that killed two others.”
Daniel’s voice went cold.
“Exposure to what?”
The scientist turned the page.
Missing.
Torn out.
Then the doorbell rang.
Police.
A car had been found abandoned three streets away.
Inside:
Vanessa’s photograph.
Sophie’s birth certificate.
