Chapter 13 - The Baby in the Other Bassinet

Daniel returned mentally to Sophie’s birth.
Two bassinets.
One night.
A mismatched bracelet.
Vanessa’s fragmented memory.
Caroline’s claim of substitution.
Now:
DECEASED INFANT.
Federal investigators obtained maternity records.
That night another baby had been born.
Female.
Same approximate weight.
Mother:
Emily Parker.
Complicated delivery.
Baby died fourteen hours later.
At least officially.
Daniel felt sick.
Had that baby been used as Sophie’s substitute?
Records showed the deceased infant’s bracelet number matched the number Vanessa remembered seeing on the bassinet.
Yes.
During several hours, the Parker infant occupied Sophie’s assigned space.
What happened to Sophie?
Transferred to a restricted research room under fabricated respiratory observation.
Who authorized?
Dr. Benjamin Reeves’ clinic credentials.
He denied personally ordering it.
Signature digital.
Could be stolen.
Then one nurse from that night came forward.
She had seen Michael Carter.
Alive.
And Vanessa.
Together.
Daniel stared at his wife.
“You were with him?”
Vanessa looked shattered.
“After I realized Sophie was gone.”
“Not before?”
“No.”
The nurse confirmed Vanessa appeared frantic.
That helped.
Then she remembered another person.
A woman.
Late sixties.
Caroline.
Caroline denied being there.
The nurse was certain.
Why lie?
Because Caroline had done something in that room.
Finally she admitted it.
She had followed Michael.
She believed Michael and Benjamin planned to take Sophie’s blood for genetic verification.
She tried stopping them.
But by the time she entered, samples had already been taken.
Then something happened.
The Parker infant?
No.
Sophie.
Her breathing crashed after an injection.
Daniel stood.
“What injection?”
Caroline whispered:
“Reversal agent.”
Michael believed a metabolic compound could temporarily amplify the marker response.
A test.
On a newborn.
Daniel nearly attacked the table.
Mara stopped him.
“Who injected her?”
Caroline said:
“I don’t know.”
Michael?
Benjamin?
A technician?
Records unclear.
Then Vanessa sobbed:
“I saw Michael holding the syringe.”
Daniel turned.
There.
Vanessa had always known Michael might have harmed Sophie.
That explained her terror.
Her hatred.
Her obsession with the box.
She was not trying to retrieve evidence for Michael.
She was terrified the box contained proof she had concealed an illegal experiment on her own daughter.
“Why hide this from me?”
“Because I thought you’d take Sophie away from me.”
“You watched someone experiment on her!”
“I didn’t know until afterward!”
Then:
“I threatened Michael. He told me if I exposed him, he would prove I helped him access the maternity floor.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Evidence supported Vanessa on that.
Her credentials were used.
Not necessarily by her.
Then Daniel understood.
Michael framed her.
Just like the $500,000 account.
Insurance.
Control.
Vanessa spent fifteen months terrified of a dead man’s evidence.
Then Michael died.
But someone continued threatening her.
Who?
She assumed Benjamin.
Maybe wrong.
Then federal investigators found the H-22 Incident file had not been created by Michael.
Author code:
C.C.
Caroline Carter.
Everyone turned.
Caroline closed her eyes.
She had recorded everything.
Why hide it?
“I needed proof before confronting Michael.”
“You had proof.”
“I needed all of it.”
Another adult choosing secrecy.
Then Daniel asked:
“What exactly happened to Sophie?”
Caroline whispered:
“She survived.”
“Obviously.”
“No.”
Her face changed.
“That isn’t what I mean.”
Then she said:
“Sophie was not the baby who nearly died that night.”
Daniel went cold.
“Who was?”
May you like
Caroline looked toward Vanessa.
“The other one.”
