Daniel moved the children to a secure location.
No family house.
No hotel.
A rental arranged through his attorney.
Vanessa was not allowed alone with Ethan.
Daniel did not forgive what happened.
Mystery did not erase abuse.
Vanessa accepted the restriction.
That surprised him.
No arguing.
No “I was scared.”
She simply said:
“I understand.”
Then the investigation shifted.

Sophie’s designation.
Not created by Vanessa.
Not created by Michael.
Someone had been tracking Sophie since birth.
Daniel hired a former federal investigator, Mara Lewis.
Within days, she found repeated contacts around Sophie’s pediatric records.
Someone accessed them using credentials from three different hospital systems.
All linked to a healthcare consultancy:
Northcrest Clinical Solutions.
Board chair:
Dr. Benjamin Reeves.
Son of Franklin Reeves.
The dead doctor’s son.
Benjamin denied knowledge.
Mara did not believe him.
Then Daniel discovered Benjamin had known Michael.
Photos.
Conference records.
A private dinner in 2015.
One year before Michael’s actual death.
Was Benjamin ally or enemy?
Vanessa said:
“Enemy.”
“How do you know?”
“Michael told me.”
Then:
“Benjamin was trying to recover the Sable files.”
Why?
Carter Biomed had been acquired years earlier by a larger pharmaceutical group.
If Sable involved unethical testing, exposure could cost billions.
But twenty-year-old wrongdoing alone did not explain tracking Sophie now.
Something remained active.
Then Ethan made another revelation.
The woman at the window—Helen, Caroline, Margaret, whoever she was—had not only told him to protect the box.
She had shown him a phrase.
Three words.
He had forgotten until now.
“Blue room downstairs.”
Daniel had no blue room.
Rachel did not.
Evelyn did.
His mother’s basement had an old blue-painted storage room.
Daniel drove there with Mara.
Evelyn protested.
“Daniel, stop this.”
He ignored her.
Behind a shelf in the blue room, they found an old safe.
Inside:
Michael’s journals.
Caroline’s letters.
Sable records.
And a cassette tape.
Daniel listened.
His father Henry’s voice.
“If Michael finds this, tell him I should have stopped Reeves sooner.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
His father knew.
Henry explained.
Carter Biomed had funded Sable as a private diagnostic project.
It began legitimately.
Then Reeves expanded it.
Certain participants with the Haley marker appeared unusually resistant to a class of neurotoxic compounds used in experimental drug formulation.
Reeves became obsessed.
Tests escalated.
Children were exposed improperly.
Some became ill.
The company buried it.
Henry discovered enough to suspect wrongdoing, but he did not report it.
He helped settle claims privately.
Caroline learned the truth.
So did Michael years later.
That explained their disappearance.
Then Henry said:
“Michael believes the marker can still be commercially useful. I think that idea is dangerous.”
Daniel froze.
Michael?
Not Reeves?
Then:
“If he has found a living child with the full H-pattern, he must not be allowed to test her.”
Vanessa whispered:
“No.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
She was shaking.
“That’s why Michael came to the hospital.”
