Chapter 9 - Christmas Without Heroes
Noah spent Christmas Eve at Grandfather’s home under temporary safety plan.
Not because Grandfather “won.”
Because authorities needed immediate distance while Eleanor’s conduct investigated.
Grandfather’s own physical response also reviewed.
He cooperated.
He did not tell Noah:
“I beat bad people for you.”
Instead:
“I should have made you safe first.”
Noah asked:
“Were you mad?”
“Yes.”
“Are you still?”
“Yes.”
“Will you hit them again?”
Grandfather took time.
“No.”
Important.
Then he repaired wooden airplane.
Not perfectly.
Broken wing seam remained visible.
Noah watched.
“Daddy’s plane?”
“Your father’s.”
“Beard Daddy?”
Grandfather smiled sadly.
“That was your Uncle Michael. He looks like your father.”
Noah processed.
“Daddy is dead?”
Grandfather’s chest tightened.
“Yes.”
Eleanor had apparently blurred this when Noah said visitor looked like Daniel, telling him not to ask.
Noah deserved simple truth.
“Does dead mean he can’t come?”
“Yes.”
No mystical ambiguity.
Noah cried.
Grandfather held him.
Then Noah asked:
“Did Daddy give me plane?”
“Your Uncle Michael gave it because it belonged to your daddy.”
That was still meaningful.
The video’s shocking line remained emotionally true through child misunderstanding without resurrecting anyone.
Then Michael joined later with permission.
Noah stared.
“You’re not Daddy.”
“No.”
“You look like him.”
“I know.”
“Did you know him?”
Michael smiled through tears.
“He was my brother.”
Noah handed repaired plane.
“Did he play with it?”
“Every day until he broke nose off.”
Grandfather laughed.
“I fixed that nose six times.”
Ordinary family history replaced secret.
Then company investigation returned preliminary finding:
7C issue was contained but reporting failures serious.
Customer remediation initiated.
No known injuries.
No evidence Daniel’s death related.
No sabotage.
Richard’s role:
authorized ambiguous classification and incomplete customer notice.
Eleanor:
issued assurance without independently verifying Daniel’s concern.
Daniel:
delayed supplier escalation initially but ultimately ordered hold.
Michael:
recommended supplier years earlier but no role in later concealment.
Grandfather:
created precedent with Northwind paperwork and competitive culture.
Board would determine consequences.
Richard asked Grandfather privately:
“Are you going to fire me?”
“I can’t.”
“What?”
“Board decides.”
Richard almost smiled.
Grandfather had finally stopped treating company as household.
Then Eleanor requested supervised contact with Noah.
Grandfather did not decide.
Child-safety professionals/court process did.
First session allowed later.
Eleanor apologized to Noah.
Not:
“Mommy was upset.”
She said:
“I kicked you. I threw your airplane. That was wrong.”
Noah hid behind counselor initially.
No forced hug.
Then asked:
“Why?”
Eleanor cried.
“Because I was afraid of what airplane would tell Grandpa.”
Noah:
“Airplanes don’t talk.”
She almost laughed.
“No. But this one had a key.”
Noah understood enough.
Then he said:
“You broke Daddy’s plane.”
“Yes.”
“Grandpa fixed it.”
Eleanor nodded.
Some things repair.
Not erase seam.
Then Michael received message from Hale Aviation independent investigator.
They had found original 7C supplier certification.
Not at company.
At AeroForge.
Signature approving questionable material batch:
DANIEL HALE.
That contradicted Daniel’s hidden audit.
