Grandfather remembered Northwind.
Experimental titanium-aluminum locking system.
Fast.
Light.
Expensive.
Prototype failed thermal cycling.
Project canceled.
Or so he believed.
Daniel’s notes suggested twelve prototype units from Lot 0 had been installed on company demonstration aircraft before cancellation.
All should have been removed.
Inventory showed only eleven returned.
One remained unaccounted.
Was this safety catastrophe?
No.
Demonstration aircraft retired years ago.
Tail number:
N417HL.
Sold to aviation museum.
Ground display.
No passengers.
Relief.
But why Daniel connect to 7C?
Because same paperwork pattern:
when part status uncertain, Hale executives changed classification rather than stop process.
Northwind Lot 0 had been relabeled:
EVALUATION COMPLETE.
Though one unit missing.
Who signed?
Grandfather.
He stared at his signature.
“I don’t remember this.”
Michael did.
“You told us missing prototype was probably destroyed during teardown.”
“I believed it.”
“You signed anyway.”
Grandfather had done decades earlier what Richard later did:
accepted incomplete evidence because operational pressure made uncertainty inconvenient.
Not fraud necessarily.
Negligent governance.
Pattern passed generations.
Grandfather sat down.
This story wasn’t him arriving as perfect protector to punish bad adults.
His violence against Richard/Eleanor at Christmas also mattered.
He had punched Richard into glass rack and struck Eleanor while holding Noah.
Protective motive did not erase risk.
He looked at Michael.
“I hit them while carrying Noah.”
“Yes.”
“I could have put him down safely first.”
“Yes.”
Grandfather closed eyes.
Noah needed protector who did not turn protection into uncontrolled violence.
He later gave complete statement.
No self-heroization.
Then Northwind missing unit located.
Museum inspection found it still installed.
Removed safely.
No damage.
No incident.
So mystery yielded prevention, not disaster.
Then 7C customer inspection found eleven suspect parts still in service across ground-support assemblies and two noncritical cabin fixtures? Need aerospace realistic. Let's say non-flight-critical test rigs? But structural fasteners could be serious. Better customers had aircraft interior support assemblies, still aviation. Inspections scheduled, no known failures except maintenance-discovered one.
No tragedy.
Disclosure still necessary.
Independent board estimated recall/remediation cost $14 million.
Painful.
Survivable.
Richard feared company collapse.
It wouldn’t.
Share price private? no.
Acquisition warranties could trigger claims.
Governance.
Then Eleanor’s motive deepened.
Why so desperate to suppress Michael?
Not merely protect Richard/company.
Daniel’s life insurance and estate contained executive-clawback provision? Hmm.
She feared Noah’s trust.
Noah had trust funded by Daniel’s shares.
If Daniel found responsible for concealed defect, trust might face claims? Corporate limited liability; not direct. Too convoluted.
Better Eleanor feared Daniel’s reputation because Noah idolized dead father and she built entire identity around him.
But violence over that feels weak.
Maybe she also signed false 7C customer notice, exposing herself to fraud claim.
Yes.
Eleanor had drafted and personally certified communication:
“All affected materials have been fully verified.”
She knew three marginal samples existed.
Potential misrepresentation.
She feared H-27 contained Daniel email proving she knew.
It did.
Thus personal legal exposure.
She attacked Noah because airplane could expose key.
Not justified.
Then Michael revealed final fact:
He had not visited Noah three times.
Only once.
Noah said man came three times.
Who were other two?
A second man resembling Daniel?
Or child conflation?
Grandfather asked carefully.
Noah said:
“One Daddy had beard.”
Michael.
“The other Daddy didn’t.”
Grandfather froze.
“Did he look like picture?”
Noah nodded.
This time, no easy answer yet.
