Chapter 4 - Room H-27

Hale Aviation had once belonged to Grandfather.

He built company repairing small aircraft before expanding into aerospace components.

Daniel became CEO.

Michael ran engineering.

Their rivalry eventually destroyed relationship.

After Michael left, Daniel took control.

Six years after Daniel’s death, company was managed by professional board with Grandfather as minority chair emeritus.

No magical family empire.

No single person could walk in and command everything.

Room H-27 sat in old prototype wing.

Corporate security confirmed it still existed.

Registered to Daniel’s executive archive.

Sealed after death because no one found physical key.

Digital inventory listed:

PERSONAL TECHNICAL MATERIALS — NONCORPORATE.

Grandfather asked why never opened.

Legal counsel explained Daniel’s estate specifically excluded H-27 pending possession of original key.

Without key, court order needed.

Nobody thought contents important enough.

Now key had been inside airplane buried with Daniel.

Daniel intentionally placed it there?

Grandfather remembered funeral.

He put airplane in coffin himself.

Did not know key.

Someone must have inserted before burial.

Possibly Daniel before death.

But he couldn’t put something into toy after dying.

Maybe he hid key years earlier.

Grandfather had not handled airplane for decades before funeral; Daniel kept it.

So plausible.

Michael somehow knew.

They drove to Hale Aviation with counsel and security.

Eleanor stayed behind under request? Grandfather cannot order. She insisted accompany because Noah? Better Noah safely with trusted caregiver. Avoid more conflict.

Grandfather refused let Noah become messenger again.

Noah stayed with household nurse/caregiver? Introduce family friend. Say licensed nanny already employed, Melissa. Fine.

Eleanor and Richard came because their knowledge mattered.

H-27 key worked.

Inside:

shelves.

Blueprint tubes.

old computer.

locked metal cabinet.

No sensational treasure.

On wall hung photograph of Daniel and Michael building model plane as teenagers.

Grandfather stopped.

He had taken that photo.

Then Michael’s voice came from doorway.

“You finally opened it.”

Grandfather turned.

Fifteen years vanished and remained at once.

Michael stood there.

Older.

Thinner.

Daniel-like enough that Grandfather understood Noah immediately.

Grandfather did not hug him.

“Why did you come back?”

“Daniel asked me to.”

“Daniel has been dead six years.”

“He asked before he died.”

“Then why wait?”

Michael looked at Eleanor.

“Because she told me Daniel changed his mind.”

Eleanor’s face tightened.

Michael continued:

“She lied.”

Another payoff.

Daniel had contacted estranged Michael shortly before death.

Wanted him return.

Eleanor intercepted aftermath and told Michael not to.

Why?

Michael walked to metal cabinet.

“He found something in company records.”

Richard moved toward him.

“Don’t.”

Grandfather looked at Richard.

“You know too?”

Richard whispered:

“That cabinet can destroy company.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

May you like

He inserted second key.

“It can prove who tried to.”
