Chapter 3 - Daniel Had a Brother Noah Had Never Met

Michael Hale was not dead.

Not missing.

Not secret.

He was estranged.

That distinction mattered.

At twenty-six Michael accused Grandfather of choosing Daniel over him in family business.

He left for Europe.

Occasional legal correspondence proved alive.

No Christmas calls.

No visits.

No relationship with Noah.

Grandfather had not seen him in fifteen years.

Daniel and Michael had looked remarkably alike.

Not twins.

Two years apart.

Same dark hair.

Same jaw.

Same Hale eyes.

A five-year-old who knew Daniel only from photographs could easily mistake Michael for him.

So the man Noah called Daddy likely wasn’t Daniel returned from grave.

It was Uncle Michael.

That answered the supernatural-looking clue by Chapter 3.

But opened larger question:

Why had Michael returned secretly?

Why did Eleanor know?

Why was Richard protecting secret?

And why give Noah something retrieved from Daniel’s grave?

Grandfather called cemetery again.

Security footage confirmed.

November 28.

Eleanor arrived in black SUV.

Michael exited passenger side.

Older now.

Beard.

Gray at temples.

But unmistakable.

Grandfather watched son he had not seen in fifteen years walk across screen.

His hand trembled.

Michael stood outside cemetery office while Eleanor signed release.

Then he took wooden airplane from employee.

He held it for nearly a minute.

Pressed it against chest.

Grandfather looked away.

There was grief there.

Real.

Then Michael handed it back to Eleanor.

Except Eleanor didn’t keep it.

Later camera showed Michael carrying airplane to SUV.

So Eleanor lied minutes earlier when she said she brought it home.

Michael did.

Why?

Grandfather demanded her phone.

She refused.

Police? He had no right. Better ask not seize.

“Show me your messages with Michael.”

“No.”

“Then I’ll ask him myself.”

“You can’t.”

“Why?”

Eleanor looked toward Richard.

Richard muttered:

“Because Michael is leaving tonight.”

Grandfather stared.

“You knew too.”

Richard said nothing.

Noah whispered:

“Daddy said he had to go before Christmas.”

Again “Daddy.”

Now understandable.

Michael resembled Daniel.

Grandfather asked Noah:

“Did the man tell you to call him Daddy?”

“No.”

“Did Mommy?”

Noah looked at Eleanor.

Her face changed.

Noah whispered:

“She said never call him anything.”

That was darker.

Eleanor had ordered Noah not even to name visitor.

Then Grandfather asked:

“Why did he give you airplane?”

Noah wiped cheek.

“He said Grandpa would know.”

Eleanor lunged toward toy.

Grandfather pulled it away.

Now motive for attack became clearer.

Michael intentionally gave Noah object Grandfather alone could authenticate.

A message.

Not merely gift.

Grandfather examined broken fuselage again.

The paper receipt was obvious.

But something rattled deeper.

He separated cracked wooden body carefully.

A tiny brass key dropped into his palm.

Tag:

H-27.

Richard’s expression collapsed.

Grandfather saw.

“What does H-27 open?”

Richard whispered:

“Daniel’s private storage room.”

“Where?”

“At Hale Aviation.”

Grandfather looked at Eleanor.

Daniel had died believing Hale Aviation was about to be sold.

May you like

Yet apparently he had maintained private Room H-27 nobody told Grandfather existed.

Michael had returned for something Daniel left there.
