Chapter 9 - What Thomas Built

The founding ledger was not simply a corporate record.

It contained CrossShield’s first twenty clients.

Including banks.

Government contractors.

Pension funds.

And Holt Infrastructure.

Naomi Price recovered a digital backup Thomas had hidden inside our family trust.

That discovery hurt more than I expected.

Thomas had anticipated everything.

Except apparently telling his wife the truth.

The ledger showed unauthorized security backdoors installed into several client systems during CrossShield’s first five years.

I did not authorize them.

Thomas did.

Hector discovered them.

So did Adrian’s father.

Celeste’s mother.

Marcus’s father.

The same adults whose children later entered my home.

Thomas’s purpose was initially unclear.

Then an old audio file surfaced.

Thomas speaking to Hector.

“We can see every hidden transaction.”

Hector:

“That means we can report them.”

Thomas laughed.

“Or control them.”

My husband had built the architecture of blackmail.

I built a cybersecurity company.

He quietly built a machine for finding other people’s secrets.

Then something changed.

Years later, Thomas apparently tried to dismantle it.

Why?

A letter explained.

Evelyn found Celeste.

The wording stopped me.

Not:

We adopted Celeste.

Evelyn found Celeste.

Thomas wrote that becoming a father changed him.

Adrian’s placement came first because Thomas believed Louis Bennett’s child might be targeted.

Celeste came next after Marianne disappeared.

Marcus after Agent Shaw vanished.

Thomas had used me to hide children his former partners might exploit.

He did not tell me because he believed ignorance protected us.

How many people in my life had justified lies as protection?

Too many.

Daniel read silently.

Then said:

“So Thomas became better?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because regret doesn’t erase what he built.”

Good intentions afterward did not undo victims beforehand.

Then Naomi found one final line in Thomas’s personal notes.

Hector has the master key. If I die before he returns, Evelyn must decide whether CrossShield deserves to survive.

The master key.

Not a physical key.

A cryptographic credential capable of unlocking historical audit archives.

Archives that could expose decades of financial crimes.

Hector had disappeared with it.

Then my emergency phone rang.

Daniel’s father.

“Hector?”

Silence.

Then:

“Evelyn.”

Daniel grabbed the edge of the table.

“Dad?”

Hector ignored him.

“I have the master key.”

“Where are you?”

“Doesn’t matter.”

“Who breached the safe house?”

Hector laughed bitterly.

“Your children.”

I looked at Adrian, Celeste, and Marcus through the glass wall of the adjacent interview room.

“They’re here.”

“Not those three.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Hector continued.

“You and Thomas raised three children.”

“Yes.”

“But Thomas protected four.”

Daniel looked at me.

I could barely breathe.

“There was another orphan.”

Hector whispered:

“And unlike Adrian, Celeste, and Marcus…”

May you like

Pause.

“…the fourth one grew up knowing exactly why Thomas chose them.”
