Chapter 10 - The Fourth Child

Her name was Rachel Quinn.

Age forty-one.

No relation by blood.

Daughter of a CrossShield systems engineer named Aaron Quinn.

Aaron discovered Thomas’s blackmail architecture before anyone else.

He died in a warehouse fire.

Rachel survived.

Thomas secretly funded her education under another identity.

But he never brought her into our home.

Why?

Because Rachel remembered everything.

She remembered her father telling her Thomas Cross was dangerous.

She remembered the fire.

She remembered Darren Holt’s father standing outside the warehouse.

And unlike my children, Rachel grew up believing the Cross family had destroyed hers.

Hector claimed Rachel now controlled an investigative firm.

She had spent twenty years infiltrating every institution connected to the old conspiracy.

Including CrossShield.

Including my children.

I finally understood.

Who encouraged Adrian to refinance his house?

A consultant introduced by Rachel.

Who helped Celeste obtain my forged medical paperwork?

A private-care specialist linked to Rachel.

Who bought Marcus’s leaked corporate information?

A shell company controlled by Rachel.

She had not forced their cruelty.

But she had fed it.

Tested it.

Amplified it.

Exactly as I had tested them with decoy accounts.

The symmetry sickened me.

Daniel asked:

“Why threaten Mateo?”

Hector answered:

“To make you choose between Evelyn and family.”

Rachel was running tests too.

Not financial tests.

Moral ones.

She wanted to prove everybody connected to Thomas would eventually betray someone they loved.

Then Hector said:

“She has the ledger.”

“You said you had it.”

“I did.”

“Then?”

“I traded it.”

“For what?”

Silence.

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“For me?”

Hector finally answered.

“Yes.”

Rachel had threatened Daniel.

Not physically.

She threatened to reveal Hector’s survival and frame Daniel as a participant in the old pension theft.

Hector surrendered the ledger to protect him.

Daniel stared at the phone.

“You disappeared for twenty-two years and now you decide to be my father?”

Hector’s breathing changed.

“I was a coward.”

No excuse.

Just fact.

Then he said:

“Rachel wants Evelyn at CrossShield tonight.”

“Why?”

“She’s going to unlock the historical archive.”

“With the master key?”

“Yes.”

“What does she want from me?”

“To choose.”

Between saving CrossShield’s reputation or exposing every crime Thomas ever helped hide.

It was not difficult.

“Expose it.”

Hector went quiet.

“You haven’t heard the cost.”

“What cost?”

“If the archive opens publicly, thousands of innocent client records will be released too.”

Medical payments.

Family trusts.

Witness identities.

Private settlements.

Victims mixed with criminals.

Rachel had built an impossible moral trap.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

Rachel stood inside CrossShield headquarters.

Behind her were Adrian, Celeste, and Marcus.

Not prisoners.

They had gone willingly.

The caption read:
