Chapter 11 - Why Daniel Was Chosen

Daniel stared at the message.

“The fifth?”

Hector’s silence answered before words did.

Daniel’s father had not disappeared randomly.

He too had a child connected to Thomas’s protection network.

Daniel.

Thomas arranged the Reyes identity change after Hector vanished.

He funded Daniel’s mother anonymously.

Paid school bills.

Protected housing.

Then stopped.

Why?

Thomas died.

Daniel had unknowingly been one of the children Thomas tried to shield.

Not adopted.

Not brought into my home.

But protected from a distance.

Rachel considered him part of the same experiment.

Five children shaped by one generation’s crimes.

Adrian became entitled.

Celeste became controlling.

Marcus became opportunistic.

Rachel became obsessed with exposure.

Daniel became poor.

And still ran through traffic to save a stranger.

I looked at him.

That was what Rachel wanted to understand.

Why had the child who received least become the one who gave most?

We went to CrossShield.

Not alone.

Agent Chen established surveillance.

Naomi prepared controlled access to the archive.

I entered in my wheelchair.

Daniel beside me.

Rachel Quinn waited in the executive operations center.

Tall.

Dark hair streaked with silver.

Plain black suit.

No theatrical villainy.

My children stood along the glass wall.

Adrian looked ashamed.

Celeste held my wedding ring.

Marcus would not meet my eyes.

Rachel looked at Daniel first.

“So you’re Hector’s son.”

“Yes.”

“You clean streets.”

“Yes.”

“With everything Thomas arranged for you?”

“I didn’t know he arranged anything.”

Rachel almost smiled.

“Exactly.”

Then she looked at me.

“Evelyn Cross.”

“You threatened a disabled man’s brother.”

“Yes.”

“You forged Daniel’s name.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated my children.”

“I gave them opportunities to reveal themselves.”

I felt anger because that sentence sounded too much like my own reasoning.

“You put people at risk.”

“So did you.”

She was right.

That did not make her right.

Rachel placed the master key beside a console.

“I want CrossShield exposed.”

“So do I.”

That surprised her.

“You’ll lose everything.”

“Maybe.”

“Your fifty-million-dollar trust?”

My children looked up sharply.

There it was.

The first time they learned.

Adrian whispered:

“Fifty million?”

Rachel laughed.

“You threw a fifty-million-dollar woman into the rain because you thought she was broke.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Rachel continued:

“But the trust is built partly on contracts Thomas obtained through compromised information.”

My stomach tightened.

The fortune itself might be contaminated.

This was no longer about taking wealth away from my children.

It was about whether the wealth ever belonged to me morally.

Rachel slid the master key toward Daniel.

“You decide.”

He stared.

“Why me?”

“Because everyone else here has already proven they’ll choose themselves.”

Daniel looked at me.

Then at my children.

Then at the archive.

And pushed the key back.

“No.”

Rachel frowned.

“I don’t get to decide what thousands of victims lose.”

May you like

For the first time, Rachel had no answer.

Daniel had refused the trap.
