Chapter 4 - The Dead Doctor’s Signature

At 7:05 the next morning, Adrian filed an emergency competency petition.

At 7:16, Celeste submitted the forged medical report.

At 7:24, Marcus uploaded a video of me falling in the rain as “evidence of cognitive decline.”

He had accidentally preserved Adrian kicking my walker.

Naomi called it the stupidest piece of evidence she had ever seen.

I called it useful.

Then CrossShield’s fraud-monitoring system alerted us.

The dead doctor’s digital signature had originated from Marcus’s laptop.

We now had forgery linked to the same device used for unauthorized corporate transfers.

Naomi wanted to move immediately.

I refused.

“Why are you letting this continue?” Daniel asked.

He had made coffee from grounds so cheap even the smell seemed apologetic.

“Because they believe they’re fighting me.”

“They aren’t?”

“No.”

“What are they fighting?”

“The record.”

That was what they never understood.

CrossShield had been founded to detect financial manipulation.

Every document.

Every login.

Every metadata change.

Every copied signature.

Every deleted email.

Recorded.

I had spent forty years building systems designed for people exactly like my children.

The tragedy was that I never imagined I would need them inside my own family.

At 9:30, Naomi discovered who had searched Daniel’s payroll file.

The access came from a CrossShield administrator account.

Assigned to Marcus.

Daniel stared at the report.

“So he threatened Mateo.”

“Probably.”

“Why?”

“To isolate me.”

His jaw tightened.

Then his phone rang again.

Mateo.

Daniel answered immediately.

His brother was crying.

“Danny, someone came to my apartment.”

“Who?”

“They said I’m being transferred.”

“No. You’re not.”

“They had paperwork.”

Daniel looked at me.

I held out my hand.

“Mateo?”

“Yes?”

“My name is Evelyn.”

Pause.

“I know.”

That surprised me.

“How?”

“Daniel talks about the lady who waves at him.”

For some reason, that nearly broke me.

I steadied myself.

“Do not sign anything. Lock your door. Police and an attorney are coming.”

Naomi dispatched people she trusted.

Twenty minutes later, the fake housing-transfer team disappeared before officers arrived.

But they left something behind.

A business card.

Holt Senior Care Solutions.

Darren Holt.

The company did not provide housing services.

It specialized in guardianship management for wealthy incapacitated adults.

That was the real plan.

Declare me incompetent.

Place me under a professional guardian connected to Darren.

Then petition the trust.

Not enough to seize it directly.

But enough to paralyze it.

Enough to force settlements.

Enough to frighten lenders and directors.

Adrian and Celeste thought this was about getting rid of an inconvenient mother.

Darren understood the bigger game.

Then Naomi sent another document.

Darren had applied to become my emergency guardian.

But the application listed three supporting family witnesses.

Adrian.

Celeste.

Marcus.

And one additional witness.

Daniel Reyes.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“I never signed that.”

I looked at the forged signature.

Neither had I.

Someone had just made the poor street sweeper who saved my life appear to be part of the conspiracy.
