Chapter 8 - The Guardianship Hearing

At 1:55 p.m., I entered the courthouse in a wheelchair.
Not hidden.
Not disguised.
Daniel pushed me.
Naomi walked beside us.
My children were already inside.
Adrian looked annoyed.
Celeste looked frightened.
Marcus immediately lifted his phone before his attorney made him put it away.
Darren Holt sat behind them.
Hector was absent.
Good.
The judge reviewed the emergency petition.
Adrian’s attorney presented the dead neurologist’s forged report.
Naomi waited.
Then asked one question.
“Your Honor, may we confirm the report date?”
The attorney gave it.
Naomi placed the doctor’s death certificate beside it.
Silence.
The report had supposedly been signed four months after his death.
Darren’s face changed.
Then Naomi presented the metadata.
Marcus’s laptop.
Marcus whispered:
“Adrian said it was legal.”
Adrian turned on him.
“Shut up.”
Celeste started crying.
The judge ordered everyone to remain seated.
Then came the forged testimony from Daniel.
Naomi asked him to stand.
He did.
“Mr. Reyes, did you sign a statement alleging Mrs. Cross was cognitively incompetent?”
“No.”
“Did you receive money from her?”
“No.”
“Were you promised money?”
“No.”
“Why did you help her?”
Daniel looked toward me.
“Because she was lying in freezing rain and nobody else moved.”
That sentence silenced the room.
Naomi played Marcus’s own video.
Adrian kicking my walker.
Celeste taking my ring.
Marcus laughing.
The mansion door closing.
My fall.
Daniel running.
No editing.
No narration.
Just truth.
Celeste covered her face.
Adrian stared straight ahead.
Marcus finally stopped smiling.
The judge denied the guardianship request and referred the forged medical evidence for investigation.
Darren immediately attempted to leave.
A federal agent blocked the doorway.
Special Agent Naomi Chen.
Not my lawyer Naomi Price.
Different woman.
Different investigation.
She looked at Darren.
“Mr. Holt, we need to discuss twenty-two-year-old pension fraud.”
Daniel stood.
“Hector?”
Agent Chen looked at him.
“Your father contacted us this morning.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“He wants immunity.”
The courtroom erupted.
Then Adrian shouted:
“He promised us protection!”
Everyone turned.
There it was.
A statement no attorney could put back inside his mouth.
Agent Chen looked toward him.
“Protection from what?”
Adrian realized his mistake.
Then Celeste broke.
“From Mom.”
I stared at her.
She corrected herself.
“No.”
Tears streamed down her face.
“From whoever Mom really is.”
I felt something colder than anger.
She genuinely did not know.
My children had been manipulated too.
But before I could process that, Agent Chen received a message.
Her face changed.
“Hector’s gone.”
Daniel stood.
“What do you mean?”
“The safe house was breached.”
“By whom?”
Agent Chen looked at Darren.
Then at my children.
May you like
“We don’t know.”
But the founding ledger disappeared with him.
