Project Lily was not a child.
It was Westbridge’s internal quality-control audit.
Named after Martin Keene’s late sister, Lillian.
No experiments.
No cloned children.
No secret nursery.
Project Lily began after several specimen-labeling errors.
Staff created dummy patient identities to test whether system could distinguish real from control records.
“Lily Cole” was one such identity.
Why Cole?
Random surname selected by software from patient-name pool.
Unfortunately Ethan was real Cole patient.
That caused confusion.
Project Lily should never have used names resembling actual patients.
Eleanor discovered this while investigating Ethan’s misrouted specimen.
She warned controls could contaminate clinical records.
Martin promised fix.
He did not fully.
Years later ransomware recovery imported old control records into modern system.
That was why Rachel saw Ethan’s name associated with Sophie.
Not because his genetic material was used.
Because control data crossed into donor record.
Then who was donor 904?
A real anonymous donor, independently confirmed through genetic matching under consent.
Rachel eventually received verified medical history.
Sophie’s paternity mystery ended.
But central image—bracelet, hidden woman, child voice—still had layers.
Rachel brought Sophie beneath house because Susan’s clue led there.
Sophie called Ethan Daddy because Rachel deliberately planted phrase to test monitoring.
Bracelet was Project Lily control artifact.
Toddler Lily in Emma’s arms was unquestionably Ethan and Emma’s biological daughter.
No switched child.
Then what was Emma hiding?
Eight months of knowledge.
And more.
Emma admitted after Rachel contacted her, she searched Eleanor’s old belongings.
She found letter.
From Eleanor.
Addressed:
TO ETHAN — IF WESTBRIDGE EVER CALLS.
Emma opened it.
Ethan stared.
“You opened a letter to me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I was scared.”
Inside Eleanor explained specimen incident and Project Lily.
She stated no evidence Ethan’s material used.
Emma should have given it immediately.
She didn't.
Why?
Because second page mentioned Emma’s father.
Ethan frowned.
“Your father?”
Emma’s father, Charles Bennett, had been Westbridge’s outside accountant.
Emma had always said he worked healthcare finance generally.
True.
But Charles signed invoices for Project Lily.
Emma feared Ethan would think her family had hidden clinic scandal.
She began investigating privately.
Rachel became her ally.
Then why Rachel say “You promised”?
Emma promised to tell Ethan after they verified Charles’s role.
She delayed repeatedly.
Rachel finally stopped waiting.
She went beneath house herself.
So Emma’s recognition of Rachel’s voice was simple: they had been secretly communicating for months.
No affair.
No hidden sister.
No kidnapping conspiracy.
Then Ethan asked:
“Did your father know my sample was misrouted?”
Emma whispered:
“Yes.”
“How long have you known?”
“Three weeks.”
That hurt more.
Charles had signed an invoice dated day after incident:
EMERGENCY SAMPLE RECONCILIATION — C-114.
He knew.
But invoice alone didn't prove wrongdoing.
Charles Bennett was alive.
Seventy-one.
Retired in Florida.
Ethan called.
Charles answered.
When Ethan said C-114, silence followed.
Then:
“Your mother told me never to let Martin erase that number.”
“Why?”
“Because C-114 wasn't the only sample they almost sent.”
“How many?”
Charles exhaled.
“Thirty-two.”
Ethan stared at Rachel.
Thirty-two families could have been affected.
Then Charles added:
“But none of them were used.”
