Chapter 1 - The Hand in the Darkness

The first strike cracked the hardwood like a gunshot.

Emma recoiled as Ethan lifted the brass sledgehammer again.

“Ethan, stop!”

He barely heard her.

For three nights, he had heard something beneath the living-room floor.

Not pipes.

Not rats.

Three soft knocks.

Always beneath the same board beside the fireplace.

That afternoon, while Lily crawled across the rug, Ethan heard something else.

A woman crying.

He swung again.

The board split.

Dust lifted from a black cavity.

Ethan dropped the hammer and ripped the broken plank upward.

Emma rushed forward when Lily began crawling toward him, scooping their one-year-old daughter against her chest.

“There’s someone down there.”

Ethan knelt.

Emma’s face changed.

“Ethan—”

He reached into the darkness.

A hand shot upward.

Fingers locked around his wrist.

Ethan jerked backward so violently his shoulder struck the floor. Emma screamed and stumbled away, crushing Lily protectively against her chest.

The hand did not release him.

It trembled.

Not attacking.

Holding on.

“Who are you?”

A weak woman’s voice rose through the floor.

“You finally came back.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

But it was Emma’s reaction that terrified him most.

Recognition crossed her face.

“Emma?”

She backed away.

“You know her?”

The fingers released him.

Something scraped beneath the floor.

Then a small plastic band appeared through the broken boards.

Ethan picked it up.

An old hospital bracelet.

LILY COLE.

His eyes moved lower.

FATHER: ETHAN COLE.

Ethan looked at the toddler in Emma’s arms.

Lily blinked innocently at him.

Then a tiny voice rose from below.

“Daddy?”

Emma began shaking her head.

“No...”

Ethan lowered his face toward the opening.

Two small eyes appeared in darkness.

He recoiled.

“Get her out.”

Emma did not move.

“Get Lily out of this room!”

Grace—the neighbor Emma had called earlier when Ethan started smashing the floor—appeared at open side entrance. Emma handed Lily to her with trembling arms.

Ethan tore away another plank.

What he discovered was not an ordinary crawlspace.

Beneath the living room was a narrow service chamber, perhaps four feet deep, connected to an old foundation corridor.

A woman lay near opening.

Beside her was a little girl.

The child looked perhaps three.

Dark curls.

Pale-yellow shirt.

And around her wrist was another hospital bracelet.

LILY COLE.

Ethan’s knees nearly failed.

The woman looked up.

Emma whispered a name Ethan had never heard before.

“Rachel.”

The woman’s exhausted eyes moved toward Emma.

“You promised.”

Ethan turned.

“Promised what?”

Rachel lifted one trembling finger.

Not toward Ethan.

Toward Emma.

Then the little girl underneath looked directly at Ethan.

“Daddy Ethan?”

Ethan’s face emptied.

Because the voice was unfamiliar.

May you like

But the words were not.

Someone had taught that child his name.
