Chapter 4 - The Key Beneath the Fireplace
The key had arrived three days after Ethan and Emma’s wedding.
No return address.
Inside envelope:
For what Westbridge owes you.
Emma assumed prank.
She put key into keepsake box.
Months later it disappeared.
She never mentioned it.
Rachel now possessed same key.
How?
A former Westbridge administrator named Susan Vale mailed it to her six months ago.
Susan had died of cancer shortly afterward.
Before death, she asked Rachel investigate “W-17.”
The key opened old archive locker.
Not beneath Ethan’s house.
Westbridge Locker 17.
Rachel found it empty except property map showing Ethan’s house.
The house had once belonged to Dr. Martin Keene, Westbridge’s co-founder.
That changed everything.
Ethan and Emma bought property five years earlier through ordinary listing.
They had no idea.
Martin died before sale.
The service corridor beneath living room was part of 1950s foundation system, later sealed.
Martin apparently used cavity for personal document storage.
Rachel believed Westbridge ledger hidden there.
Why?
Susan’s note:
M.K. KEPT ORIGINAL RELEASE BOOK BENEATH YELLOW FIREPLACE.
Ethan’s fireplace was cream stone now.
Old listing photos showed mantel painted yellow.
So Rachel came.
Why not tell Ethan?
Because she didn't know whether Ethan was victim, participant or bait.
She contacted Emma because Emma already knew clinic discrepancy.
Emma begged her not enter house secretly.
Rachel did anyway.
She found foundation hatch.
Sophie was with her because emergency childcare canceled? Bringing child into crawlspace reckless. Rachel admits poor choice; better she expected safe storage room, not cramped trap. She had no one she trusted and believed visit 5 mins; still reckless.
Inside, hatch mechanism failed.
They became trapped.
Then Ethan heard knocking.
Investigators searched cavity.
Behind brick pier they found metal cashbox.
Inside:
Westbridge specimen-release ledger.
Dozens of names.
Ethan’s included.
But ledger didn't show recipient.
Only codes.
Ethan:
C-114 → W17-3.
Rachel:
R-228 → D09-1.
Emma was not patient.
Then a handwritten note:
LILY IS NOT THE CHILD.
LILY IS THE CONTROL NAME.
The same fictional name.
Why would training name appear in older physical ledger?
The note was dated before ransomware training.
Meaning “Lily” had existed as internal code earlier.
Emma whispered:
“So they lied about when it started.”
Rachel nodded.
The fictional Lily identity was not created for 2023 training.
It predated it.
Then Ethan found another page.
W17-3 — RELEASE REVERSED.
Below:
DO NOT DESTROY. RETURN TO COLD STORAGE B.
If true, Ethan’s specimen was never used.
It had been mistakenly released, caught, returned.
That fit paternity test.
Then Rachel’s code:
D09-1 — DONOR 904.
Sophie’s father was donor 904.
Not Ethan.
So what was mystery?
Why did someone fabricate overlap?
Why surveillance?
Why hide ledger?
Then Emma noticed initials beside reversed release:
E.M.
Her initials.
Emma Marie Cole.
But ledger dated two years before she ever visited Westbridge.
Ethan looked at her.
“That can't be you.”
Emma stared.
“No.”
Rachel whispered:
“It isn't.”
She turned page.
