Chapter 13 - Eleanor’s Second Box
The deed belonged to Ethan’s house.
Not current deed.
An older 1989 transfer.
Ethan had been an infant.
Property then owned by:
Mercer Family Recovery Trust.
Ethan had never heard of it.
Was house secretly his inheritance?
No.
Trust dissolved in 1996 and property sold normally through several owners before Martin Keene purchased.
Ethan later bought it at market price.
No hidden ownership.
Why photograph Ethan inside?
Eleanor had briefly lived in house.
Ethan stared.
His mother never told him.
Charles explained.
After Ethan’s father, Michael Cole, left family when Ethan was infant, Eleanor spent eight months in transitional housing program operated by Mercer Family Recovery Trust.
Mercer was Eleanor’s maiden name.
No connection to Ethan’s later company? Ethan surname Cole. He is Ethan Cole; user prompt names ETHAN but bracelet says ETHAN COLE. Fine.
The trust was created by Eleanor’s parents to support nurses and single parents? Family trust with property.
Eleanor lived there temporarily with baby Ethan.
Then moved.
Decades later Martin Keene unknowingly bought same property.
Later Ethan unknowingly bought childhood house.
Coincidence again, but perhaps why Eleanor knew foundation cavity? She did.
She had hidden second box there before leaving in 1989.
Martin later discovered cavity and used same location for ledger.
Why would Eleanor leave personal documents?
She feared ex-husband Michael might claim custody and wanted preserve records proving stable housing and support.
The box contained letters, custody papers, photographs.
No criminal secret.
Ethan felt strange.
He had smashed floor searching for unexplained knocking and uncovered two generations of secrets in same cavity.
Then photograph.
Baby Ethan in Eleanor’s arms.
Beside them stood another woman:
Rose Carter.
Who?
Charles didn't know.
Letter identified Rose as social worker who helped Eleanor.
No connection to Project Lily.
Ethan almost laughed.
“Every name feels like a trap now.”
Rachel said:
“Then stop treating names as answers.”
Good lesson.
They researched Rose.
Retired social worker, alive, eighty-two.
She remembered Eleanor.
She also remembered baby Ethan.
“Your mother was terrified your father would take you.”
Did Michael threaten?
Yes during bitter separation.
But court records showed custody settled; Michael received supervised visits, later stopped attending.
No kidnapping.
No secret paternity.
Ethan asked why Eleanor kept photograph hidden.
Rose said box wasn't intended forever.
Eleanor returned once to retrieve it but couldn't access because property renovations.
She eventually gave up.
Then Martin found cavity decades later but apparently did not find Eleanor box, deeper behind joist.
That closed second box.
Yet one document troubled Ethan.
Custody form listed:
CHILD: ETHAN MICHAEL COLE
EMERGENCY CONTACT: DANIEL REED.
Ethan had never heard name.
Rose remembered Daniel.
“He helped your mother.”
“How?”
“Drove her to appointments. Fixed things at house.”
“Was he my father?”
“No.”
Rose answered immediately.
Michael Cole was father; old paternity records plus later DNA family evidence consistent.
Daniel was family friend.
Then why unknown?
He disappeared from Eleanor’s life after custody case.
Rose thought they argued.
This could become new mystery, but central not resolved yet. Need not open until Ch15.
Then Ethan found Daniel Reed’s name elsewhere.
On Project Lily courier manifest.
Twenty-seven years later.
Same person?
Age would fit.
Rachel stared.
“That's not coincidence.”
Ethan agreed.
For first time, old family box and Westbridge story touched through one man.
