Chapter 12 - The Login in Emma’s Name

The login did not belong to Emma.

Westbridge had created guest account in her name after 2023 notification attempt.

Password setup link went to old email address Emma no longer controlled.

Domain had expired.

A data broker later acquired it.

Someone reset account.

Who?

Thomas Keene.

He admitted.

That was how he accessed Rachel shared notes and Project Lily records.

He deliberately chose Emma account because it gave plausible deniability.

He wanted investigation point toward Emma if discovered.

Emma stared at him across interview room.

“You were willing to destroy my marriage.”

Thomas looked ashamed.

“I told myself I was forcing truth out.”

“No. You were making everyone else pay for your father's choices.”

That landed.

Thomas faced criminal investigation for unauthorized access and stalking-related conduct.

No wealthy-family settlement erased it.

Then audit showed he had downloaded L.C. record.

He saw system linked fictional Lily to Ethan/Emma real daughter.

Instead of recognizing migration error, he suspected cover-up.

He anonymously sent Rachel screenshot.

That was what triggered Rachel’s belief Sophie donor record might connect Ethan.

Thus chain:

Old Project Lily dummy records.

Ransomware migration contamination.

Thomas unauthorized access.

Rachel donor inquiry.

False Ethan link.

Emma secret investigation.

Susan key.

Hidden ledger.

Rachel trapped beneath floor.

Bracelet.

Sophie’s planted phrase.

Everything converged.

Then DNA testing extended beyond Sophie at Rachel request.

Verified donor 904 through independent genetic service.

No relation to Ethan.

Ethan’s destroyed sample status confirmed through two physical inventories and chain-of-custody signatures.

Could one still have been copied secretly?

No evidence.

Story would not manufacture impossible certainty, but available records strongly established no reproductive use.

Then Ethan requested independent testing of his toddler Lily only after Emma agreed.

Results:

Ethan biological father.

Emma biological mother.

No switched baby.

No duplicate Lily.

No mystery child.

The small eyes under floor belonged to Sophie.

The woman was Rachel.

The hospital bracelet was training artifact.

Emma recognized Rachel because they had been investigating together.

So why did Emma shake head desperately when Sophie said Daddy?

Because she knew Ethan would interpret phrase literally and feared exactly what happened.

She had helped Rachel devise phrase? Yes.

Emma admitted she suggested “Daddy Ethan” because it was memorable enough to detect leaks.

“That was your idea?”

“Yes.”

Ethan stared.

“So when she called me Daddy, you knew it was a code.”

“Yes.”

“And you still said nothing.”

“I panicked.”

Ethan closed eyes.

Emma’s silence had turned seconds into nightmare.

Then Rachel said:

“She was protecting me.”

Ethan replied:

“She was also withholding from me.”

Both true.

Then Charles Bennett came to house.

He apologized.

He had removed Page 47.

He had encouraged Eleanor delay disclosure.

He had kept her binder after death.

“I thought if no sample was lost, no harm was done.”

Ethan looked around torn floor.

“A lot of harm comes from people deciding information doesn't matter.”

Charles nodded.

Then construction crew prepared repair.

Before closing cavity, Ethan insisted entire foundation professionally inspected.

At far end, inspector found another metal box.

Thomas swore he had never seen it.

Rachel didn't know.

Emma didn't.

It bore Eleanor Mercer’s handwriting:

NOT PROJECT LILY.

Ethan stared.

That distinction mattered.

Inside was no fertility record.

No bracelet.

No sample log.

May you like

Only a property deed.

And a photograph of Ethan as a baby.
