Chapter 11 - William’s Confession

William did not pay Victor to paralyze Grant.
He paid him to discourage aggressive rehabilitation for six months.
Why?
Merger vote.
Grant had planned attending board meeting from wheelchair.
Physical recovery wasn't necessary.
So how would rehab affect vote?
William feared Grant returning publicly would rally board.
He wanted son focused on health and away from company.
Victor agreed Grant was pushing too hard medically.
William exploited that legitimate concern.
He paid for private care and asked Victor to emphasize risks.
Victor sent frightening MRI warning.
Grant withdrew.
William won vote.
Six months became years because Grant internalized fear.
William admitted:
“I wanted six months of your absence. I helped create twelve years of surrender.”
Grant stopped recording.
That sentence hurt more than conspiracy would.
His father had not destroyed spinal cord.
He had manipulated fear.
Then:
“I did not know about Selena’s vial accident until later.”
Grant stared.
William knew?
Victor confessed after Selena became adult.
William paid Victor another amount.
Why?
To amend study liability quietly.
William feared lawsuit harming Holloway.
He buried medical incident even after evidence suggested it hadn't caused lasting damage.
So Grant had been denied truth to protect company.
Then William:
“Rachel found out. She hated me for it.”
Why didn't Rachel tell Grant?
Because by then William terminally ill and Grant medically fragile after another surgery.
Rachel postponed.
Then William died.
Rachel continued investigation.
Postponement became habit.
Then Grant asked Nathan if he knew confession existed.
“No.”
Nathan cried.
Their father had manipulated both.
Then Grant realized Selena may have known William paid Victor.
She did.
Victor told her.
So when she entered Grant’s life years later, she knew his father had helped suppress truth.
Did she target Grant out of guilt?
At first, yes.
She attended charity auction specifically hoping see him.
Wanted apologize.
Instead they talked.
Then relationship developed.
She never confessed.
That made love inseparable from deception.
Grant ended relationship permanently.
Not revenge.
Boundary.
Then rehab progressed.
He could walk twenty feet with braces.
Emma cheered.
But she still sometimes smiled strangely when blue vial mentioned.
Grant noticed.
“What else did Mom tell you?”
“Nothing.”
“Emma.”
She hesitated.
“Mom said you would think Grandpa did it.”
Grant stared.
“She knew?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“She said he wasn't last person.”
Last person what?
Who needed Grant seated?
After William died, somebody else benefited from Grant remaining certified disabled.
Rachel held voting control.
Then after Rachel died, Nathan.
Neither appeared malicious.
Who else?
Trust contained provision:
If Grant recovered and resumed executive control, a deferred compensation pool terminated.
Beneficiaries included executives.
One name:
Selena Marlowe.
Grant stared.
How was Selena beneficiary of Holloway compensation?
She wasn't employee.
Then trust attorney corrected:
Not Selena.
S. Marlowe Consulting.
Different Marlowe.
Vincent Marlowe.
Selena’s uncle.
May you like
He had been paid millions as Holloway medical-risk consultant for eight years.
As long as Grant remained disabled.
