Chapter 1 - The Night Grant Stood Up

For twelve years, Grant Holloway had measured every room by the width of his wheelchair.

Doorways.

Elevators.

Restaurant aisles.

Even his own living room.

Then, at 9:17 on a Tuesday night, he saw Selena holding a syringe against his daughter’s arm.

“Let me go!”

Emma’s scream tore through the penthouse.

Grant turned.

Selena had one hand locked around the eight-year-old’s wrist.

The other held the syringe.

Before Grant could cross the room, the needle entered Emma’s arm.

She cried out.

“Get away from my daughter!”

Grant drove his wheelchair forward so hard one wheel lifted slightly as he turned.

His hand struck Selena’s wrist.

The syringe flew across the glossy floor.

Emma immediately retreated behind him, sobbing.

Selena stared at Grant.

“She’s ruining everything!”

“Touch her again and you’re done.”

Selena grabbed his shoulder.

Grant caught her wrist and shoved her away with all the leverage he could generate.

She stumbled.

Then moved toward Emma again.

Grant turned sharply.

His right foot hit the floor.

Not dragged.

Pressed.

Emma saw it.

Her crying stopped.

“Dad…”

Grant froze.

“Your leg moved.”

Selena stopped too.

But her expression was different.

Emma was confused.

Selena was terrified.

Grant looked down.

His right foot was flat.

Then his left.

“Grant…”

Selena’s voice trembled.

“Don’t.”

That word changed everything.

Grant gripped both armrests.

He pushed.

His knees straightened.

His body rose.

For the first time in twelve years, Grant Holloway stood.

Emma stared.

Selena backed away.

Grant did not look astonished.

He looked furious.

“It’s been twelve years.”

He took one staggering step.

Then another.

Behind him, Emma bent near the sofa.

She picked up something that had rolled beneath it.

A tiny glass vial.

Clear liquid.

Blue cap.

She looked at its label.

Then at Selena.

And smiled.

Grant saw the smile.

“What is that?”

Emma quickly closed her fingers.

“Nothing.”

Grant’s face changed.

Emma had never lied to him like that.

Selena saw the vial too.

All color left her face.

“Emma.”

The girl backed away.

“Give me that.”

Grant stepped between them.

“Why?”

Selena said nothing.

Grant held out his hand.

“Emma.”

Slowly, Emma gave him the vial.

Its printed pharmacy label had been torn away.

Only three handwritten characters remained:

G.H. — 12

Grant stared.

His initials.

And the number of years he had spent in a wheelchair.

Then he looked at Selena.

She was already running for the door.
