June 18 had always been ordinary in Carter family history.
Henry was home under medical care.
Michael visited that evening.
Hattie stayed overnight.
Henry died next afternoon after cardiac event related to long-standing heart disease.
No suspicious death.
Medical records supported it.
So what happened June 18?
Margaret Vale remembered argument.
Henry accused someone of taking blue packet from office.
Hattie shouted.
Michael arrived later.
Then Henry asked Margaret to leave room.
Next morning Henry apologized.
He told her:
“I made my family think inheritance is prize. It was supposed to be responsibility.”
No accusation of murder.
No dramatic deathbed confession.
But something changed.
Penelope examined anonymous chip.
Forensic expert confirmed genuine encrypted storage matching watch modification.
Files included Carter Development transactions.
The $1.2 million escrow diversion did not go to Michael.
It went through Northstar Kennels & Security and eventually returned.
Who authorized transfer?
Electronic credentials:
H.CARTER-ADMIN.
Henry?
Maybe.
But Henry had told auditors he did not.
Signature logs were altered.
One file contained scanned internal memo:
HATTIE AUTHORIZATION — TEMPORARY LIQUIDITY.
Hattie had approved transfer using husband’s administrative authority.
Why?
To save failing side investment owned by Thomas’s widow.
Hattie said she planned to return money.
It was restored.
But still unauthorized.
Henry discovered.
That caused marital rupture.
He considered changing estate.
So blue packet likely contained signed amendment plus evidence Hattie misused company funds.
That gave Hattie powerful motive to find it.
But what about Michael?
He had spent six years letting suspicion fall partly on himself to protect mother.
When Penelope confronted him, he admitted knowing Hattie had moved some money.
Not full amount.
“I thought she fixed it.”
“You let your father believe you might be responsible.”
“He knew eventually.”
“How?”
“The night before he died, I told him.”
June 18.
Michael claimed he cleared his name.
Henry apologized.
Then promised blue packet would “set everything straight.”
That supported theory signed amendment might restore Michael’s inheritance while exposing Hattie.
Why would Michael help Hattie find/destroy it now?
He wouldn’t.
Unless packet contained something else.
Then Penelope examined video again.
Watch man used left hand to unlock kennel.
Michael was right-handed.
Weak clue.
More important:
Michael’s silver watch was worn on left wrist.
Video man wore it on right.
Could be Michael switching wrists.
Could be another person.
Lily suddenly remembered:
“The watch man smelled like Grandma’s medicine.”
Hattie used expensive cedar-and-clove arthritis balm.
Not Michael.
Someone close to Hattie had same scent.
Penelope asked who bought balm.
Hattie refused.
