Chapter 6 - The Note Michael Swore He Never Wrote
Michael submitted handwriting sample voluntarily.
Expert found similarities but could not confirm authorship.
Someone could have imitated him.
Penelope no longer knew whether husband was abuser, conspirator, target—or all three.
One thing remained certain.
When Hattie mistreated Lily, Michael defended mother instead of child.
No mystery could erase that.
Penelope told him so.
“Even if watch isn't yours in footage, you walked in and ordered me to kneel.”
“I lost control.”
“You saw leash.”
“I saw my mother on floor.”
“And you chose her before asking what happened.”
Michael looked away.
That failure belonged to him.
Then Hattie changed story.
She admitted searching for blue packet.
She claimed Lily had accidentally found it weeks earlier.
Hattie believed signed amendment might invalidate current estate plan.
Why drag Lily toward kennel?
“I didn't drag her to put her inside.”
Footage contradicted tone, if not precise intent.
Hattie said she was forcing Lily to show where she moved packet.
“The cage was open because I searched underneath it.”
“And leash?”
Hattie lowered eyes.
“Unacceptable.”
Not explanation.
“Who unlocked kennel for you?”
“I don't know.”
“You were standing beside him.”
“I was looking down.”
Penelope did not believe her.
Then Hattie said:
“You think Michael wants that document destroyed. You’re wrong.”
“Why?”
“Because if signed amendment exists, Michael gets less house. But he also gets something he wants more.”
“What?”
“Proof Henry changed his mind about him.”
According to Hattie, father and son had been estranged before Henry died.
Henry accused Michael of stealing company funds.
Michael denied.
No charges followed.
Draft amendment reducing inheritance was written during dispute.
A later signed version might restore Michael’s share.
Or expose actual thief.
That made blue packet more than property document.
It could contain evidence about old Carter Development fraud.
Penelope investigated.
Six years earlier, $1.2 million disappeared from construction escrow accounts.
Money was eventually restored anonymously.
Internal inquiry ended after Henry’s death.
Michael was suspected.
Never proven.
Hattie insisted Thomas had actually moved funds years earlier through dormant companies and Michael discovered it.
But Thomas was already dead.
Could Henry have learned truth?
Maybe blue packet contained reconciliation letter.
Then Samuel Reed found receipt.
Henry notarized something one day before death.
Not at Reed’s office.
At home.
Witness:
MARGARET VALE.
A private nurse who cared for Henry during final month.
Margaret Vale had disappeared from Carter family records immediately after funeral.
Penelope tracked her.
Margaret was alive.
And when Penelope mentioned silver watches, woman went silent.
Finally she said:
“You’re asking the wrong question.”
“What should I ask?”
“Not who wore Michael’s watch.”
