Chapter 11 - The Second Watch
Penelope felt cold.
First watch:
right wrist.
Vertical clasp nick.
Henry’s watch.
Andrew.
Second watch:
left wrist.
Different scratch.
Possibly Thomas’s watch—the one Michael wore now.
Could Michael have returned home later?
Office camera showed him leaving headquarters at 2:07 p.m.
Carter house was twenty-two minutes away without traffic.
Second watch frame timestamp:
2:31.
Possible.
Michael had repeatedly claimed he arrived only after Penelope.
That was false.
Vehicle data confirmed his SUV entered neighborhood at 2:28.
He parked in alley behind house instead of driveway.
Why?
Michael finally admitted truth.
“Hattie called me.”
Penelope’s chest tightened.
“She said Andrew found something in kennel.”
“You came home.”
“Yes.”
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
“Were you man in second footage?”
Michael looked at lawyer.
Then at Penelope.
“Yes.”
There it was.
Not full answer.
But central suspicion was no longer mistake.
Michael had been beside kennel.
He had worn Thomas’s watch.
Why did he unlock door?
He insisted Andrew had already unlocked kennel.
Michael entered after.
“What did you do?”
“I took something out.”
“What?”
“Blue packet.”
Penelope stared.
“You found it?”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
“I don’t have it.”
“Who does?”
“Hattie.”
Hattie denied.
Michael said packet was wedged beneath kennel’s removable floor tray.
Andrew loosened lock.
Michael arrived later, saw corner, pulled packet out.
Lily watched.
Hattie demanded it.
Michael refused.
Then Hattie told Lily to kneel and asked where she had first found it.
Michael said he ordered mother stop.
Why did Lily fear him?
Because next thing Michael did looked terrifying.
He took blue packet downstairs.
Then returned and told Lily:
“Forget you ever saw this.”
Michael meant to protect her from estate fight.
To six-year-old already frightened by Hattie, it sounded like threat.
But that did not explain leash.
Or deletion.
Or Michael’s later slap and demand Penelope kneel.
Those actions showed authoritarian pattern independent of secret.
Michael admitted he lost control after seeing mother injured and assumed Penelope attacked first.
Again, explanation.
Not excuse.
Then Penelope asked:
“Why delete footage?”
“I didn't.”
System logs disagreed.
Michael-Carter-Home account.
But Michael produced phone record.
At deletion time—3:18 p.m.—he was being interviewed by first responding officer, phone visible on body camera.
Could not have deleted footage from phone.
Shared household tablet remained missing.
Someone else used account.
Then Lily whispered:
“Grandma put Mommy’s tablet in dog cage.”
Penelope froze.
Her tablet.
She had forgotten old iPad stayed at house.
It also had administrator access.
If Hattie used it, she could delete footage under household credentials.
Search of kennel found no tablet.
But beneath tray investigators discovered something else.
A torn strip from blue packet.
