Chapter 14 - What Michael Did
The gray packet reconstructed nearly everything.
Henry discovered Hattie’s unauthorized transfer.
Thomas had not stolen money.
Michael had not stolen it.
Hattie had moved funds to rescue an investment connected to Thomas’s widow, intending to return them before audit.
She did return them.
But she forged Henry’s approval.
When Henry discovered truth, he created restitution and estate safeguards.
He also placed transaction evidence inside Thomas’s watch because Thomas’s reputation had been damaged by rumors after death.
Henry gave that watch to Margaret.
Margaret returned it to Michael on night Henry died.
Michael copied some files.
Then watch vanished.
Gray packet explained why.
Hattie stole Thomas’s watch next morning.
She removed chip.
But she could not decrypt it.
Years later she swapped Thomas’s watch back into Michael’s possession hoping he would unknowingly lead her to chip or trigger old safe logs.
Where had Henry’s watch gone?
Andrew eventually inherited it indirectly through Hattie.
She gave it to him when asking help search kennel.
Thus first figure in footage was Andrew wearing Henry’s watch on right wrist.
He unlocked kennel.
He was complicit in searching for packet, but recovered audio showed him telling Hattie to leave Lily alone before he walked away.
Then Michael arrived wearing Thomas’s watch on left wrist.
So second figure was Michael.
The visual clue had not lied.
It had simply shown two almost identical watches at different moments.
Penelope turned toward husband.
“What happened when you came home?”
Michael finally stopped minimizing.
“I saw Mother questioning Lily.”
“With leash?”
“Not yet.”
He found blue packet under kennel tray.
Took it downstairs.
Read enough to understand Hattie’s financial misconduct and Lily’s independent trust.
Hattie followed.
They argued.
She grabbed packet and ran upstairs.
Michael followed several minutes later.
By then Hattie had looped leash around Lily.
“What did you do?”
“I told her to stop.”
“Then?”
“I took leash off Lily.”
Penelope stared.
“But when I entered, leash was on her.”
Michael lowered head.
Because Hattie put it back after Michael walked away.
“Why would you walk away?”
“I went downstairs to find packet.”
“You left Lily with her?”
“Yes.”
That was unforgivable negligence.
Not same as ordering abuse.
Still a choice.
Then Hattie admitted final piece.
Michael had never told her to cage Lily.
Never instructed leash.
Never told her to make Lily kneel.
But he had spent years allowing Hattie’s authoritarian behavior, dismissing Penelope’s objections as “family discipline.”
Hattie assumed he would protect her.
When Penelope entered and reacted, Michael did exactly that.
He saw injured mother and struck wife before asking Lily what happened.
Then ordered Penelope to kneel.
Lily’s instinctive kneeling revealed this was not first time Hattie used humiliation as discipline.
Michael claimed he had never seen leash before.
But he had seen forced kneeling.
And tolerated it.
Penelope’s voice shook.
“You taught her Grandma could do this.”
Michael did not deny it.
The watch mystery was almost solved.
Almost.
One question remained.
Who deleted seven minutes?
Hattie.
Why?
To hide her treatment of Lily, Michael’s earlier presence, Andrew’s search, and blue packet.
Where was blue packet now?
Hattie finally admitted she had hidden it.
Inside wall behind family photographs.
Police recovered it intact except one torn page.
The signed June 18 restatement was genuine.
Henry’s estate instructions were valid subject to probate review.
Then Penelope reached final page.
There was a paragraph no one had mentioned.
It was not about money.
Not about Hattie.
Not about Michael.
It was addressed to Lily’s future guardian.
And beneath it was a name Penelope had never seen before.
ELIAS VALE.
Margaret Vale saw name and went white.
“Don’t read that yet.”
Penelope looked up.
“Why?”
“Because that has nothing to do with the watches.”
“Then what does it have to do with?”
