Chapter 14 - The Code in the Logbook

As Ethan held his wife's hand, his eyes caught a small leather journal resting on the nightstand beside the heart monitor. It was Eleanor’s personal diary from four years ago, its pages filled with frantic, hurried handwriting up until the date of her disappearance.
He opened the cover with his free hand. On the inner sleeve, Eleanor had written a final note in dark blue ink:

If you are reading this, Ethan, they have already taken me. Do not trust Claire. She discovered the second vault key hidden in Lily’s nursery, but she doesn't know the master combination.
Ethan read the short entry twice, his eyes narrowing as he realized the full scope of the plot. The abuse of his daughter earlier that evening hadn't just been cruelty—Claire and Damon had been searching Lily’s dress and toys for a physical key that Eleanor had hidden six years ago.
